Once you have received instructions, you could start by summarising them back to your supervisor to check that you have understood them correctly.

Ask questions if you are unclear on a particular instruction, but listen carefully; asking the same question twice will waste your supervisor’s time and reflect negatively on you. If any issues arise once you have started the work, make some effort to figure out as much as possible by yourself through research. Failing this, rather than repeatedly interrupting your supervisor with questions (which can be frustrating and disruptive for them), consider listing out the questions that arise overtime and then asking them all at once when your supervisor has a free moment.

Also, don’t forget to confirm the deadline. Without a deadline, it will be difficult for you to prioritise tasks effectively if you have more than one task on the go. You will also not know whether you have capacity to take on further tasks. I have been given tasks with 30 minute deadlines and others with a deadline of 7-10 days, so it’s always best to ask. There might even be flexibility around your deadlines, so there’s no harm in clarifying. Communication is key. It’s better to ask about flexibility than to simply miss a deadline (and of course, offer to work late or over the weekend if this is the only way you’ll be able to get everything completed on time).

",
