Despite the challenges, potentially long hours and pressure that you are likely to experience, there are many positives of life as a trainee. Training contracts give you the opportunity to interact constantly with bright, ambitious people, a majority of whom are very friendly and willing to help and pretty much all of whom will be reliable and responsive. You will get used to this reliability and responsiveness very quickly (the same will of course be expected of you) and will come to realise how much easier it can make your working life. Of course, many City training contracts are also exceedingly well paid and offer access to a range of additional benefits (gym access, health insurance etc.).

Training

Much is said about the training contract “learning curve”, and although most of the time you probably won’t feel totally out of your depth, the opportunity to constantly learn is something you shouldn’t take for granted. To assist with your development: 

Intellectual fulfilment

Although your hours may be long, the working day tends to fly by, far more so than lectures at university or revision sessions. This is especially the case when you are working on interesting tasks, or where there are intellectually challenging issues underpinning the work you do. Reading interesting cases and articles when putting together a research note, or getting involved in some level of negotiation and/or drafting, can really engage your attention.
