1. Read all the information you are given before making a decision

There may be a number of potentially sensible or reasonable options for each corresponding scenario, with you having to identify the most appropriate of these. Alternatively, you may be asked to select the least appropriate option or even to rank the options by appropriateness. It’s therefore imperative that you read the question carefully and properly assess every option before submitting your answer. 

2. Focus only on the information contained within the question

Avoid making any assumptions about the context of the scenarios presented; only consider the information you are explicitly provided when assessing the circumstances and reviewing the proposed responses or courses of action.

3. Research the employer and the nature of the role in advance

When assessing proposed responses or courses of action, always bear in mind what the firm is likely to expect from its employees in terms of (for example) attitude, commitment, working hours and flexibility. Also consider the nature of the role for which you are applying, as this can determine what’s expected of you. 

For example, if you are applying for a high pressure client-facing role that you know involves long hours at times, then remember this if questioned on how you would react if you were asked to cancel your social plans at a moment’s notice in order to work on an urgent task that has unexpectedly come in at the last minute. 

The nature of the role might suggest that the employer expects you to select whichever response involves working longer hours and being flexible with your time. Similarly, if you are applying for a role for which accuracy and attention to detail are very important, then bear this in mind if a question is asking whether you would rush through a piece of work in a particular context. 

Don’t forget that firms might differ in terms of the types of responses they expect, meaning there is no such thing as an “objectively correct” answer for every scenario. Context is key. This is why it’s important to take into account the types of behaviours that each prospective employer will likely be looking for. 

4. Be honest

It's important to remember that these tests are designed not to catch you out, but to test your suitability to the firm and for the role. If you answer questions honestly and do not proceed through that round of the assessment process, then perhaps that firm was not the right firm for you. It may simply be that your priorities and expectations do not align with what the firm expects, so working there might have been a miserable experience for you anyway. 

On the flip side, if you respond with what you think the firm is looking for – rather than answering honestly – you risk being rejected from the process on the basis of answers that didn’t genuinely reflect how you would have reacted in reality!
