Interview ice breaker questions 

Some interview questions may also be used as icebreakers or to provide an insight into your thought processes. Below are some examples of questions that you may be asked. 

Q. Tell me about… 

You may simply be asked to talk about one of the experiences mentioned on your CV or in your application. This can involve a more conversational approach, so don’t necessarily try to highlight as many skills as possible. Just talking enthusiastically and in detail about one or more of your experiences will enable the interviewer to ascertain how the experiences supported your personal development.

Q. What do you typically do when you have time off?

An insight into how you spend your free time can help a firm to ascertain whether you’re the kind of person who is committed to personal development. For example, if you actively pursue your passions and interests, this might demonstrate your initiative, drive, desire to experience different cultures, and willingness to push yourself by leaving your comfort zone from time to time.

Q. If you had the time and opportunity to learn a new skill, what would it be and why?

This question might be asked to test whether you always have a goal in mind. If you mention a particular skill, you might then be asked to explain why you haven’t yet had the chance to pursue it, so give this some thought in advance. 

Q. What made you want to study in the UK (if you are an international student)?

This type of question can give the interviewer an insight into your thought process when making serious decisions. If you chose to study in another country, perhaps explain which other countries you had considered and why you eventually made the choice you made. Think about these factors in advance, just to make sure that you can give a detailed answer. Also be prepared to discuss whether you intend to stay in the UK for the long-term and if so, why.

Q. How did you choose your degree?

Again, this question will give the interviewer an insight into how you make decisions. If you chose your degree because of factors that also apply to the career you’re pursuing, your answer might also help to reinforce your career motivation. Perhaps explain which sources you used when researching into different universities and your key reasons for settling on your chosen university.

Q. What influenced your decision to do a Masters degree?

If you have studied (or are studying) a Masters degree, this question may well come up. Interviewers might simply be interested in your reasons for investing the time and money in further study, or may instead be testing your thought process. Be prepared to explain why you thought a Masters degree would benefit you in the longer-term and to discuss what you enjoyed about it.
