Eligibility requirements for paralegal roles differs wildly between different firms and opportunities, so you should always do your own research.
There are no statutory qualifications that you must have before you can work as a paralegal, so eligibility generally depends on requirements imposed by specific law firms and legal teams.
As a generalisation, the larger the firm – and the higher the pay – the more likely it is that there will be stricter eligibility requirements (for example in relation to grades, university ranking and prior experience), plus more onerous recruitment processes. Much smaller firms may be willing to give you your first ever paralegal role, even if you have minimal prior working experience. It all depends.

If you’re struggling to get a job at your ideal type of firm, be patient. Countless people have started at small firms and transitioned to much larger firms – sometimes in multiple steps – throughout the early stages of their careers. The more experience you gain, the more compelling your future applications will look. In other words, starting as a paralegal at a smaller firm can lead to paralegal roles and training contracts at elite firms.
However, as a slight caveat, perhaps don’t focus for many years on one specific area (e.g. family law) if your ultimate aim is to work in a totally different area (e.g. private equity), as 5 years’ experience in an unrelated area may result in future employers worrying that you lack the relevant knowledge and experience to take on a role at a similar level for a different practice area.
Eligibility of foreign Citizens
If you are a resident outside the UK, you should first consider whether you have the right to work in the UK. If not, consider which visas may be available to you, and which employers may be willing to sponsor those visas (if required). Don’t waste time applying to firms who will be unwilling to take you on even if you meet their benchmarks.
Also consider whether your education and experience to date is sufficiently relevant for a UK firm to hire you as a paralegal over somebody UK based. For example, it might be easier to secure a paralegal role in the UK if you have secured a degree from a common law jurisdiction, subsequently studied in the UK (for example, if you have passed the SQE or an LLM), and secured experience in similar types of firms abroad.
