This can help to inform your future career choices, as could chatting with people who work in other roles such as legal tech, business development, or knowledge management in law firms, or business teams if paralegalling at a company.</li><li style=\"font-size: 14px; font-family: Verdana, Geneva, sans-serif; color: rgb(0, 0, 0);\"><strong>The work:&nbsp;</strong>at times, paralegal work can be interesting, involve ample responsibility, and result in intellectual fulfilment. Paralegals &ndash; especially those working in smaller firms or as part of a hub &ndash; can also gain exposure to a real variety of work and clients.</li><li style=\"font-size: 14px; font-family: Verdana, Geneva, sans-serif; color: rgb(0, 0, 0);\"><strong>Career prospects:</strong> gaining paralegal experience can enhance your prospects of securing a training contract further down the line - if this is a route you&rsquo;re interested in &ndash; as it can demonstrate your career motivation, and that you&rsquo;ve developed relevant knowledge and skills.</li><li style=\"font-size: 14px; font-family: Verdana, Geneva, sans-serif; color: rgb(0, 0, 0);\"><strong>Training:&nbsp;</strong>tied to this,<strong>&nbsp;</strong>there are often constant opportunities to learn from your colleagues - including more experienced paralegals, qualified lawyers, and partners &ndash; including learning from feedback, and by osmosis when watching them operate.</li><li style=\"font-size: 14px; font-family: Verdana, Geneva, sans-serif; color: rgb(0, 0, 0);\"><strong>Network:</strong> working in a firm or legal team can provide ample networking opportunities &ndash; including opportunities to attend formal networking events and socials, as well as opportunities to meet and work with others internally, plus external stakeholders such as clients and experts. I&rsquo;ve known lawyers who are qualified in other jurisdictions choose to become paralegals in the UK purely to restore their own work/life balance.&nbsp;</li></ul><hr><p><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0);\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\"><strong>Challenges faced by paralegals</strong></span></span></span></p><ul><li style=\"font-size: 14px; font-family: Verdana, Geneva, sans-serif; color: rgb(0, 0, 0);\"><strong>Hierarchy:&nbsp;</strong>it can be tough feeling like you&rsquo;re at the bottom of the fee earner pile, and this can lead to some people feeling looked down on (even if in reality they&rsquo;re not). It can also impact confidence, especially until you&rsquo;ve had a chance to prove yourself.</li><li style=\"font-size: 14px; font-family: Verdana, Geneva, sans-serif; color: rgb(0, 0, 0);\"><strong>Quality of work:</strong> being the most junior fee earner can sometimes mean &ndash; especially at larger firms &ndash; that the more boring and administrative work filters down to you, including tasks like printing and scanning. However, these tasks can still provide important learning opportunities, and there can of course be regular opportunities to get stuck into more interesting work.</li><li style=\"font-size: 14px; font-family: Verdana, Geneva, sans-serif; color: rgb(0, 0, 0);\"><strong>Learning curve:&nbsp;</strong>as with training contracts, paralegal roles can involve a significant learning curve, with paralegals needing to get to grips with new systems, processes, technologies and legal concepts fairly quickly. This can be quite overwhelming at the start, especially where paralegals don&rsquo;t have access to the same structured training sessions, development initiatives, and briefings about the context of deals and cases as trainees. So a real challenge is getting comfortable with being outside your comfort zone.</li><li style=\"font-size: 14px; font-family: Verdana, Geneva, sans-serif; color: rgb(0, 0, 0);\"><strong>Adapting to fee earner preferences:&nbsp;</strong>working for a range of fee earners can be challenging, as each will likely have different preferences regarding how they want work to be carried out and presented. Keeping track of these isn&rsquo;t always easy.</li><li style=\"font-size: 14px; font-family: Verdana, Geneva, sans-serif; color: rgb(0, 0, 0);\"><strong>Time pressure:&nbsp;</strong>paralegals can also be under immense pressure at times, especially if working on large multi-jurisdictional matters, for demanding clients, at international City firms (or &ndash; equally &ndash; if managing their own client matters).</li><li style=\"font-size: 14px; font-family: Verdana, Geneva, sans-serif; color: rgb(0, 0, 0);\"><strong>Career development:&nbsp;</strong>paralegals need to be more proactive about their own career development, as there isn&rsquo;t a guaranteed route to qualification, or fixed opportunities to work in different teams. However, as a junior, it can be intimidating to communicate your goals to senior decision-makers.</li><li style=\"font-size: 14px; font-family: Verdana, Geneva, sans-serif; color: rgb(0, 0, 0);\"><strong>Pay:</strong> although we&rsquo;ve included pay as a potential advantage of paralegal roles, in the longer term, paralegals tend to earn less than lawyers who qualify and progress up the ladder.&nbsp;</li></ul><p><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0);\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">Many of these challenges can result in positive outcomes however. The role should help to boost your confidence and resilience over time, as well as your legal knowledge and experience and your ability to interact professionally with more senior lawyers and clients. All this could later help you to hit the ground running on a training contract, or progress up the paralegal career ladder.</span></span></span></p>",
