I was informed by the recruiter (who liaised with the firm and myself throughout the application process) that in the past the firm had rejected strong candidates because they answered this question solely with a future TC as the focus. Therefore, I answered this question strategically by balancing my immediate goal to progress in the firm as a paralegal, but did not discount my aspiration to one day apply for a TC. This reassured the employer that I was a reliable and longer-term investment, but in a way that demonstrates I do not lack ambition, and I am openminded on different career opportunities. My answer structure was as follows:</span></span></p><p><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0);\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><strong>Discuss my current motivations and priorities for wanting to work as a paralegal</strong></span></span></span></p><ul style=\"font-size: initial; font-family: initial; color: initial;\"><li style=\"font-size: 14px; font-family: Verdana, Geneva, sans-serif; color: rgb(0, 0, 0);\">I said my current motivation stemmed from enjoying my current paralegal role (in real estate) and studying law at university.<strong>&nbsp;</strong></li><li style=\"font-size: 14px; font-family: Verdana, Geneva, sans-serif; color: rgb(0, 0, 0);\">I described how real estate was my favourite LPC module due to the broad number of complex title, environmental and construction issues I studied/came across in practice, and how I found them intellectually stimulating.&nbsp;</li><li style=\"font-size: 14px; font-family: Verdana, Geneva, sans-serif; color: rgb(0, 0, 0);\">I linked my motivations to my current focus of building on this interest and developing my understanding of the area under the best quality legal supervision in an award winning real estate practice.&nbsp;</li><li style=\"font-size: 14px; font-family: Verdana, Geneva, sans-serif; color: rgb(0, 0, 0);\">I made it clear this was my immediate priority (This role had a start date of 2 months &ndash; compared to TCs which are usually 2 years)</li></ul><p><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0);\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><strong>Demonstrate how I could use the role to evaluate longer term career decisions&nbsp;</strong></span></span></span></p><ul style=\"font-size: initial; font-family: initial; color: initial;\"><li style=\"font-size: 14px; font-family: Verdana, Geneva, sans-serif; color: rgb(0, 0, 0);\">I emphasised that I see the paralegal role as an excellent opportunity for professional growth and skill development as a junior in a law firm.</li><li style=\"font-size: 14px; font-family: Verdana, Geneva, sans-serif; color: rgb(0, 0, 0);\">I said that I understand there are many similarities between the roles of paralegals and trainees.</li><li style=\"font-size: 14px; font-family: Verdana, Geneva, sans-serif; color: rgb(0, 0, 0);\">I added the role would help me assert how I seek to progress my legal career in a calculated and informed manner &ndash; having a detailed understanding as to the roles of each within the firm. &nbsp;</li></ul><p><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0);\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><strong>Balance between paralegal growth and future TC aspirations</strong></span></span></span></p><ul><li style=\"font-size: 14px; font-family: Verdana, Geneva, sans-serif; color: rgb(0, 0, 0);\">I expressed my long-term ambition to develop a successful legal career where I am happy in my role &ndash; whether this is long-term as a paralegal or wanting to progress as a trainee and then to a qualified solicitor.&nbsp;</li><li style=\"font-size: 14px; font-family: Verdana, Geneva, sans-serif; color: rgb(0, 0, 0);\">I did not discount my aspiration for TCs, but reiterated how my immediate focus was to thrive in this role and utilise the experience to make an informed decision on my career progression over the next 5 years.&nbsp;</li></ul><p><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0);\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><strong>I then used this as an opportunity to ask them about their career progression and keep the interview interactive </strong></span></span></span></p><ul style=\"font-size: initial; font-family: initial; color: initial;\"><li style=\"font-size: 14px; font-family: Verdana, Geneva, sans-serif; color: rgb(0, 0, 0);\">I had two interviewers and as it happened, one of my interviewers was a supervisor and one was a qualified solicitor, so it was interesting to get each of their perspectives on their own career journeys.</li><li style=\"font-size: 14px; font-family: Verdana, Geneva, sans-serif; color: rgb(0, 0, 0);\">Afterwards I commented how I found each of their career journeys interesting and how I could use their insights to my own advantage when deciding how I would like to proceed going further.</li></ul>"
