Overview of paralegal assessment centre structures

Litigation assistant role

  1. Application: CV and cover letter
  2. Telephone screening: casual discussion regarding suitability for the role (recruiter).
  3. Final interview: in-person interview covering competency, motivation and scenario-based questions (~1 hours, with one associate and one legal director)

I was booked in for an hour-long slot with one associate and one legal director from the team I had applied to and was provided with their names ahead of the interview. Recruitment also sent me a preparation document with advice on the types of questions that could come up. Overall it was a relaxed environment and I enjoyed the discussion. The firm called me 8 days after the interview to tell me I had been successful.

Legal services paralegal role

  1. Application: one 500 word question covering my motivation for joining the firm/specific team, and why me.
  2. Psychometric test: Watson Glaser test and Arctic Shores behavioural assessment.
  3. Telephone interview: a casual discussion regarding general motivations for applying (with the head of legal services in the relevant office).
  4. Assessment centre: written task (1 hour 25 mins), group task (30 minute discussion, 5 minute presentation, with 2 legal services managers), and speed interviews (3 x 10 minute interviews with supervising paralegals, members of graduate recruitment, and 2 legal services managements).

Think about your personal motivations for selecting the firm as the starting point for your legal career – what do they offer that stands out from other firms in your opinion? Also consider your motivations for applying to be a paralegal and why you want this particular role. I wanted to build legal experience doing trainee-level tasks in preparation for further career steps and to build confidence in working in a law firm. The firm called me two weeks after the assessment centre to tell me I had been successful.
