Flying- aiming to gain my pilots license and currently on Ex4 of RAF training syllabus with UBAS. I regularly fly 2-4 times a week because I really enjoy the technical challenge of flying as well as the pure joy of flying.
Advocacy- Semi-finalist of the Warwick Negotiating Competition and Mooting Competition.
Tutoring- currently teach Maths, English and American history to a GCSE- A Level standard.
Music- Grade 6 in Viola (ABRSM), university and school orchestra (leader of viola section for each).
Sports- University of Warwick- Hockey (3rd (XI) team, Futsal (4th XI) team. Member of the football teams for Asian, Punjabi and Law societies. School- football (2nd XI), hockey (2nd XI) and tennis teams (13th seed).
Cover Letter
My interest in working in an in-house legal role came out of my 2-week tenure as a legal research analyst at Imperial. I reviewed and drafted ethics procedures on whether Imperial, when entering commercial agreements with pharmaceutical companies, was compliant with ethical and regulatory guidelines. The ethics procedures I wrote gave me invaluable insights into the legal background of each individual commercial agreement and the level of research required, which led me to producing work that Imperial themselves used as tangible data. I also learned how an in-house lawyer’s work often intersects with other teams- after drafting multiple ethics procedures my team was tasked with presenting them to different departments in Imperial, such as finance and marketing. Over the two weeks, my drafting of documents and public speaking greatly improved. This experience gave me a broader understanding of how legal considerations intersect with business decisions and strategies, revealing the importance and efficiency of large companies having an in-house legal team.
I am interested at working at Diageo because of the wide range of issues it offers for interns. I appreciate how the role does not constrain activity to one area- but rather I would be able to work across many different areas, such as protecting Diageo’s intellectual property rights and supporting Diageo’s compliance issues. This multi-approach would allow me to exhibit my problem-solving and analytical skills in a highly challenging legal environment, whilst also not being limited to strictly one area. I am also attracted to the prospect of general soft skills training. I believe that working in any profession requires a fundamental array of general skills such as teamwork and organisation and I would highly value any training that expands on what I have already learned from the RAF or playing competitive sports.
As an Indian-Pakistani student, I am also attracted to Diegeo’s diversity policy. I believe that diversity is important because it reduces groupthink and offers different intellectual perspectives. I appreciated Diageo’s London-based REACH network which aims to celebrate worldwide cultures, but I was especially interested in GREENIQ, which uniquely offers employees with a passion for substantiality to connect and reduce their impact on the environment. The uniqueness of Diageo’s approach to diversity ensures me that they go beyond simply offering ‘an inclusive society’ like many global businesses offer, ensuring me that I will be welcomed into Diageo’s community.
