There were no typical application questions. Just:

• A form
• An online assessment: including personality sections, a data analysis exercise, and verbal reasoning questions.
• A job simulation exercise: including an online assessment focussing on situational judgment questions, some motivational questions, and a written response 

Online assessment     

This was a non-time-limited online assessment. From what I can remember, there were three types of questions within the assessment:   

• Personality based questions
• Numerical reasoning questions
• Verbal reasoning questions

The personality based and verbal reasoning questions were pretty standard and what you would expect in most other law firm online assessments. From what I can remember, the verbal reasoning questions were in a similar format to the Watson Glazer. 

The numerical reasoning questions were a bit unexpected and definitely something to watch out for. There were quite a few of these and they all focussed on analysing data in various forms (e.g. graphs, tables, etc.) and drawing conclusions from this data. I would advise doing some revision on percentages.

You are given five hours to complete the online assessment which is plenty of time; I finished it in around an hour. As mentioned above, it makes no difference how fast you answer the questions - the five hours is simply a cut-off time.

The online assessment was fairly straightforward. I would recommend doing some Watson Glaser prep as the questions that came up were not too dissimilar from the Watson Glaser test. Additionally, a bit of revision on percentages would probably help with the numerical reasoning questions.

Job simulation  

A week after I had completed the online assessment, I received an email telling me I had progressed to the next stage and a link to complete an online Job Simulation. From what I can remember, the Job Simulation consisted of three different questions types, divided into different sections. 

These were:

• Situational judgment questions
• Motivational questions: in the form of video interview responses
• An analytical task: in the form of a written response

The situational judgment questions involved presenting a workplace scenario and asking you how you would respond to this. These questions were fairly standard.

From what I remember about the motivational questions, there were two. 

• For each, I was given two minutes to prepare and then three minutes to answer.
• The first question concerned my motivations for wanting to pursue a training contract at Deloitte Legal.
• The second concerned my motivations for wanting to become a commercial lawyer.

From what I can remember about the written response question:

• This involved being asked to send a letter of advice to a business based on their current operations. 
• I was given quite a lot of data/information and asked to draw conclusions based on this and then present my findings to the business in the form of a letter. 
• This task was entirely commercial (from what I can remember) and there was no requirement to consider any legal implications for the business. I found this task the hardest as there was quite a lot of data to look through and compile a response. 

Concerning the Job Simulation, I would recommend preparing answers to ’why Deloitte Legal?’ and ‘why commercial law?’. But as is the case with every video interview don’t just simply recite prepared answers word for word. Some revision regarding percentages would also probably help here, especially for the written response question. 

I passed both of these stages and was invited to a final interview.
