With over 88 billion miles travelled annually on its network, National Highways plays a crucial role in keeping the UK moving, ensuring that people and goods can travel efficiently and safely. I am inspired by the organisation’s dedication to maintaining and modernising vital infrastructure, and I am enthusiastic about contributing to work that directly supports the nation’s connectivity and safety.

Moreover, National Highways’ commitment to innovation is impressive, especially in the use of technology to improve road user experiences and reduce costs. For example, the recent M6 trial with Alchera Technologies, which used AI to predict traffic flows and optimise roadwork planning, highlights the organisation’s proactive approach to minimising delays and maximising efficiency. This forward-thinking attitude, further exemplified by the Digital for Customer programme and tools like the roadwork status checker, demonstrates how National Highways is utilising technology to improve operational effectiveness and customer satisfaction. The opportunity to contribute to such initiatives is exciting, as it aligns with my passion for working in an environment that promotes innovation and continuous improvement.

Finally, I am drawn to National Highways' strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), exemplified through initiatives like the Embrace and Access for All networks. The variety of legal seats on the National Highways Legal Graduate Programme excites me, as it offers a unique opportunity to gain direct experience in diverse and impactful areas of law. From advising on critical civil litigation and employment law matters to supporting procurement processes and regulatory issues, the legal work at National Highways is both varied and integral to its operations. With the programme offering significant responsibility early on, I will have the chance to contribute to important matters and engage directly with high-stakes projects. This diversity of legal work, alongside the opportunity to make a tangible impact, presents a unique opportunity for me to develop my skills while supporting an organisation that plays a critical role in maintaining the nation’s connectivity and safety.

Another key aspect that attracts me to this graduate programme is its comprehensive approach to professional development. The blend of workshops, practical training, and firsthand experience would enable me to develop a solid foundation for my career, bolstering both my legal skills and broader professional capabilities. Additionally, the support of a resolute line manager and mentoring from experienced colleagues will help guide my development, ensuring that I effectively navigate my career path. Having benefitted from mentorship during my time at Patch App, where I received valuable guidance in developing both technical and professional skills, I understand how crucial mentorship is for growth. The chance to network and collaborate with peers through the Early Talent community will further improve my experience, enabling me to build valuable connections and learn from others.
