Why are you applying to Hill Dickinson for a training contract? (250 words) 

I am driven to contribute to an ambitious, growing firm with an international outlook. With 16 Tier 1 rankings in the Legal 500, and a strong global presence, Hill Dickinson aligns perfectly with my career aspirations. The chance to collaborate with market leaders and household-name clients presents unparalleled learning opportunities, supporting my goal to become a technically skilled, business-focused lawyer. 

However, the firm’s unparalleled commitment to innovation and technology is what really distinguishes Hill Dickinson for me. Their integration of advanced AI contract review platforms and machine learning technologies to enhance efficiency, sets the firm apart from others. This combination of legal expertise and technological innovation not only enables resourceful, cost-effective solutions for the firm and clients alike, but also redefines the modern standard of commercial law. 

Finally, engaging with [trainee] during a Legal Cheek law fair reinforced my interest in Hill Dickinson’s culture. Alongside reinforcing the firm’s values in everyday practice, [trainee] emphasised the high-quality training, and consistent support and mentorship systems in place to help trainees learning and development. Additionally, I am drawn to the client-centric philosophy Hill Dickinson embodies in each practice area. My experience volunteering for various helpline services and pro bono clinics has shown me the importance of tailoring advice and communication styles to individual clients, a skill I am eager to develop further with Hill Dickinson. 

As a firm, we operate across a number of sectors and specialisms, and offer sector-specific training contracts in each of our business services, health and marine groups. Which of our teams would you be most interested in completing a seat in and why? (250 words) 

Whilst I remain open-minded about the areas in which I train, and moreover, qualify into, Hill Dickinson’s Health and Social Care team greatly appeals to me. My undergraduate degree in psychology has given me a strong foundation in understanding human behaviour, mental health, and the complexities of social care; insights that closely align with the work of Hill Dickinson’s Health and Social Care team. Studying psychology has not only deepened my interest in healthcare law but also equipped me with analytical and empathetic skills that are invaluable when navigating the legal and ethical challenges within this sector. This background allows me to approach cases with a unique perspective, particularly in matters relating to mental capacity, patient rights, and regulatory compliance.

Additionally, during my marketing and communications internship at a company distributing osteoporosis medical devices, I gained valuable insights to the intersection of healthcare, regulation, and patient engagement. A key part of my role involved translating complex medical research into accessible articles for both the general public and NHS audiences, reinforcing my ability to communicate intricate healthcare topics clearly and effectively. My exposure to the challenges of introducing osteoporosis medical devices to the market aligns with the firm’s work in medical product liability, healthcare policy, and regulatory affairs, where legal precision and effective communication are crucial. This understanding of healthcare operations and public engagement strengthens my ability to contribute a commercially aware, patient-centred perspective to the firm’s work.

With our values of trust, respect, innovation and collaboration in mind, what person or event has had the biggest impact on you in the last 12 months and how would you utilise what you have learnt from this in your role as a trainee solicitor at Hill Dickinson? (250 words) 

One of the most impactful experiences I have had in the last 12 months was completing my undergraduate research project, assessing the accuracy and reliability of eyewitness memory in court proceedings. I approached this assignment with the goal of producing a unique and innovative piece of research that was of publishable quality. I was determined to maximise the potential impact of my work, contributing to the subject in a way that could be recognised by others in the academic community. Further, this was the first opportunity I had to carry out original research in collaboration with renowned experts in the field, and I was keen to make the most of it.

Collaborating closely with my supervisor, I incorporated doctorate-level Python coding into my analysis to yield more sophisticated findings. This experience pushed me beyond my comfort zone, requiring innovation, resilience, and problem-solving to master a complex coding technique. Overcoming challenges reinforced my determination and adaptability, while coordinating with my supervisor strengthened my ability to communicate and apply expert insights. Consequently, the insights drawn established my project as one of the strongest in the cohort. At Hill Dickinson, I would leverage these skills to approach legal challenges with creativity and determination, ensuring that I contribute meaningfully to the firm’s innovative, client-focused approach.

Why are you applying to Hill Dickinson for a training contract? (250 words)

I am applying to Hill Dickinson for a training contract to experience its unique corporate responsibility initiatives that will encourage me to enhance a strong mindset of having a contribution within society. It appeals to me how Hill Dickinson is committed to making a positive contribution to the world through charity work, ESG policies and environmental targets. The approach towards making a positive contribution towards our people is what excites me because I am interested in having a humanitarian impact associated with the welfare and wellbeing of others. This aligns with the firm’s collaboration with the ‘GoodSAM’ app which was produced during the COVID-19 pandemic and was designed to provide emergency first aid response based on the geolocation of patients suffering from life threatening conditions. It appeals to me how the partners at the firm were committed to provide legal and regulatory advice to change the dynamics of healthcare. Similarly, I worked as a COVID-19 vaccine assistant where I ensured the comfort and well-being of patients after their vaccination. I had the responsibility of addressing inquiries and providing guidance to individuals seeking information or reassurance, using my bilingual language skills to assist patients who required clarification. This allowed me to enhance my mindset of having a contribution within society as I promoted the COVID-19 vaccination as a community value and demonstrated the corporate responsibility of our people by building trust and respect with patients while addressing their needs efficiently and assisting with language barriers aligning with the firm’s core values.

We offer sector-specific training contracts in each of our business services, health and marine groups. Why are you interested in a sector-specific training contract and why have you chosen this sector? i.e. business services, health or marine. (250 words)

I am interested in a sector specific training contract specialising in health because of it providing flexibility and opportunity. I am attracted to how the stream of health is open to many areas such as litigation, public law, inquests, commercial and health litigation allowing me as a trainee to be flexible and to gain an in-depth insight into the different services and care the firm provides for its clients. The opportunity of doing a client secondment within the NHS is also something that appeals to me as it involves putting the patients first and providing the best solution possible aligning with the firm's values. Training in health is rewarding and I am fascinated in having an integral role in public law and health litigation by advising on complex legal matters which would improve and help facilitate a better healthcare system for clients. Previously working as a [redacted] I administered medical documents related to the end-of-life process of patients efficiently and accurately andensured compliance with Birth and Deaths Registration Act 1953 and Coroners and Justice Act 2009, showcasing attention to detail and adherence to procedures. As well as this, I made referrals to H.M. Coroner for further investigation, subject to approval by the Medical Examiner. This demonstrates my commitment to maintaining ethical considerations by protecting patient information and having a role in efficiently administering end-of-life decisions equipping me for a seat in health litigation which will involve similar tasks.
