Why law?

My early exposure to business at Nisa Local sparked my interest in commercial law as I observed how legal and political shifts impact business operations. This led me to study a degree in Law and Business Management, where I have developed a comprehensive understanding of the interplay between legal frameworks and commercial strategies. 

Shadowing at [Redacted] deepened this, as I attended political update meetings and observed how firms adapt legal advice to evolving challenges. I am inspired by the opportunity to research and apply my legal and business knowledge to new circumstances.  During my shadowing, I also contributed to client research and attended client relationship management meetings, which deepened my interest in client-focused work. This led me to volunteer at Citizens Advice, where I build rapport with clients and write case reports. I find the holistic advisory role rewarding and enjoy collaborating on challenging cases. This piqued my interest in assisting both long-standing and new clients across various industries. This passion aligns with Dickson Minto’s commitment to providing result-driven advice to long-term partnerships while providing strategic support to startups.  

Additionally, as a Sponsorship Coordinator for a charity, I negotiated with businesses, integrated their needs into cross-jurisdictional contracts, and ensured legal compliance. This affirmed my passion for tailoring advice to clients and cemented my ambition to work at a firm like Dickson Minto, which has a strong domestic presence with a global outlook from its expertise in cross-border transactional work.    

Why Dickson Minto?

With a focus on the employment aspects of M&A, business transfers, settlement agreements, executive remuneration and service agreements, Dickson Minto’s employment law practice offers an ideal learning environment. I am particularly inspired by Nicola Mitchell, who progressed from trainee to head of employment law at the firm. Dickson Minto’s strong culture of retention and career development is evidenced by the progression of many partners who began as trainees. This reflects the firm’s commitment to nurturing talent and providing a clear path for professional growth, aligning with my career aspirations.  

My interest in employment law grew after attending an event on employment disputes. This inspired me to become Project Lead for the [Redacted] at the [Redacted] where I educate the local community on employment rights. The dynamic nature of employment law, such as recent changes from Labour and the Worker Protection Act, excites me.  

The firm’s private equity M&A practice and longstanding relationships with private equity firms such as BC Partners and Charterhouse greatly appeal to me. My academic and professional experiences, including participation in the [Redacted] Commercial Law Society, have fostered a strong interest in intellectual property and M&A. I am particularly drawn to the firm’s work on complex IP aspects of cross-border transactions and GDPR compliance. The opportunity to learn from industry-leading experts, such as Ewan Gilchrist, known for his M&A expertise in the financial sector, further solidifies my desire to train at Dickson Minto.  

Dickson Minto’s unique emphasis on confidentiality and discretion stands out to me. The firm’s ability to maintain its high reputation while upholding a private culture is a testament to its professionalism and commitment to excellence.  My experiences reflect a similar approach. As Company Treasurer at [Redacted], I am trusted to handle fiscal matters with care. From submitting annual accounts to Companies House and HMRC to handling disclosure matters discreetly. Similarly, as an advisor at Citizens Advice, I handle sensitive welfare cases with confidentiality and discretion while delivering high service by simplifying complex legal frameworks for clients to easily understand. This client-centered approach aligns with Dickson Minto’s emphasis on fostering long-term client relationships built on trust and tailored advice.    

Relevant Skills and Experience

I demonstrated resilience, adaptability, and teamwork while working with a charity team to build a Mosque in Pakistan. Political riots led to disruptions to tradesmen's availability which threatened the mosque's timely completion and planned outreach events.  

To address these challenges, I took on additional responsibilities by organising weekly Zoom meetings to keep all teams updated on the political impacts. I communicated this information in a clear way so that everyone could adjust their efforts accordingly.  I also proposed that our outreach officer requests for neighbouring mosques to announce the need for tradesmen. When the officer was unable to work for two weeks, I stepped up, making calls to mosques myself. This strategy successfully secured eight workers, ensuring the mosque’s timely completion and the success of our planned events.  

This experience highlights my ability to remain composed under pressure and collaborate effectively to deliver results. These are essential qualities at Dickson Minto, where I will have to navigate unfamiliar and challenging situations.    

As Project Lead for [Redacted], I led a small team in organising a business panel event for aspiring entrepreneurs. I broke down and delegated tasks, allocating internal deadlines ahead of external ones. I also implemented automated reminders, enabling the team to stay aligned without constant follow-ups and encouraging independence.  After receiving feedback to delegate more complex tasks rather than balancing them myself, I improved my leadership by assigning these tasks with detailed instructions and creating multiple opportunities for feedback to ensure improvement. This experience has honed my time-management, organisational skills and receptiveness to feedback – key attributes to success as a trainee at Dickson Minto.  

I also strive to take initiative, as demonstrated in my role as a Junior Manager at Nisa Local. When the local laundrette closed, I identified a community need and proposed implementing a car park laundrette. This boosted sales, addressed a community gap and attracted new customers to the shop. This aligns with Dickson Minto’s commitment to recruiting trainees who think laterally and approach challenges with innovation.

My proactive problem-solving, teamwork, adaptability, and dedication to client-centered service position me well for a career in corporate law.
