I ranked in the top 5% in the Canada Mathematics Competition, hosted by [redacted] Centre of Education in Mathematics and Computing.
I campaigned and was elected as the [redacted] Course Representative at the [redacted]. To improve remote learning students' engagement, I created an online communication space which was used as the primary communication channel more visible to each student. Through active participation in the student-staff liaison meeting, I learned to be assertive and strengthened my ability to challenge constructively.
I participated in the [redacted] Client Interviewing Competition, in which I emerged as the grand finalist, surpassing 60 contestants. From gathering critical information to using the correct emotional skills to make the client comfortable, the diverse skillsets would allow me to understand the intricacies found in a successful client interview.
Outside of academia, I am an amateur photographer. I love that photograph act as a witness and proof of reality and create a social impact. I received a sponsorship offer from [redacted], the renowned clothing brand with 2.5 million Instagram followers.
I enjoy playing sports, particularly golf. As a fond golfer, I joined the local sports team where I developed my interpersonal skills by mentoring junior golfers and organising events to strengthen intra-society friendships. I recently started playing squash, which has proven to be a delightful and stress-releasing addition to my sporting repertoire.
2. Why are you applying for a training contract at Harbottle & Lewis? (250 words)
I was drawn to Harbottle & Lewis’s (H&L) ethos of ‘quality over quantity’, which permeates everything the firm does. H&L’s focus on quality is widely reflected through its cross-practice team in the technology, media, and entertainment (TMT), evidenced by its successful advisory role for The Panoply, a technology-enabled services group, in acquiring a provider of high-value IT support services for £26 million. Their expertise was confirmed by being shortlisted as the ‘TMT Team of the Year’ for the Legal Business Awards. As a founder of the social-media startup who understands the complex nature of the TMT industry, H&L’s enviable record of consistently securing premium-quality work despite having a single domestic office is a testament to its ability to deliver exceptional services in the best interests of its clients. I aspire to train in such an environment, working on complex simulating transactions that involve high-profile clients whilst learning from solicitors with passion and work ethic to exceed expectations.
Furthermore, I am motivated by the ‘hands-on’ nature of H&L’s training contract. I enjoy the challenges that come from being awarded early responsibility. The small trainee intake, coupled with the opportunity to be seconded to one of H&L’s clients’ businesses will enable me to gain industry-specific experiences and independently handle cases from the early stage of my career. This flat hierarchical structure not only ensures trainees are seen as valued individuals but will allow H&L to continuously serve as a pioneer and stand at the forefront of future trends.
