This story is captivating due to its potential to reshape the UK telecom landscape into a structure resembling the consolidated US market. I'm particularly interested in its impact, as it may lead to fewer competitors, affecting pricing, innovation, and consumer choices.
Moreover, this merger has introduced a myriad of legal and regulatory complexities. I find it fascinating how law firms play a pivotal role in addressing these issues, ensuring compliance, and securing shareholder approval. Please set out some of your activities, achievements or positions of responsibility. Of which of these are you most proud and why? (400 words)
My proudest achievement is founding [redacted], a technology start-up. The company is an online auction community where users trade intangible goods such as ideas. I supported auctioneers to register ideas with copyright, which enabled transparent transactions. Our team faced challenges when pitching for funding and negotiating with potential investors. As a team of college graduates without proper knowledge of business operations, we placed too much emphasis on launching the business itself and neglected critical issues such as the protection of Intellectual Property (IP) rights. Consequently, we got rejected by six investors despite full-day pitches. Reflecting on this failure, I proactively participated in commercial workshops to resolve issues concerning cross-border infringement risks, regulation of pirated content and digital portability. I learnt that product development without a strategic solution to safeguard IP will result in counterfeit products and failure to meet profit targets. I also implemented a project management system to track our progress efficiently. This experience remains my proudest achievement because I learned to take ownership and push beyond my limits to achieve success in my career. I am confident that this would enable me to persevere and overcome challenges when faced with adversity as a trainee at McDermott Will & Emery.
I campaigned and was elected by my peers as the PGDL Course Representative at [redacted]. To improve the engagement of remote learning students, I created an online communication space which was used as the primary communication channel, making it more visible to each student. Describe a difficult situation in which you were involved and what you learned from it. (150 words)
During my recent vacation scheme at [redacted], I was asked to draft clauses for a facility agreement by referring to the newly introduced Fire Safety Act 2023. The task was particularly challenging, as I was given no precedent document and was asked to complete the task within two hours. I immediately embarked on thorough research, delving into the intricacies of the Act and its potential impact on the agreement. I also sought advice from experienced trainees to ensure that my first draft contained no errors. Despite not being asked to do so, I took the initiative to carefully review the entire agreement, spotting an error that the trainees had overlooked. Raising this issue led to improvements that otherwise might have been detrimental to the client. I feel confident that my ability to work efficiently with others will make me well-suited to McDermott’s smaller trainee intake and collegiate office.

The emergence of AI-generated music has sparked significant controversy in the entertainment and technology sectors. Google and Universal Music are currently negotiating to license artists' voices for AI compositions.
The story initially caught my attention while preparing corporate pitch of potential clients to Ignition Law’s partners as a Business Development assistant. AI-generated music offers exciting opportunities for startups and established companies. These include enhancing customer experiences and creating personalised product soundtracks. Law firms specialising in entertainment and intellectual property law are poised to guide these ventures by drafting innovative contracts and navigating the uncharted territory of AI-generated content.
As an aspiring solicitor, it raises important questions about creative ownership and the evolution of copyright law. Such trends challenge traditional copyright paradigms as AI-generated work blurs the lines between human and machine creation. Legal frameworks must adapt to address the novel issues surrounding authorship and intellectual property.

I am keen to gain insights into the firm’s long-term strategic plans. It is evident that McDermott is on a trajectory of consistent growth, exemplified by the firm’s strategic emphasis on lateral hires, Shah Jahan from Hogan Lovells, to bolster niche departments such as Global Energy and Infrastructure. Similarly, this is evident in recent lateral hires from firms such as Dentons and Squire Patton Boggs, the firm’s major competitors. I am curious to know if this expansion strategy will be a consistent path forward or if there are broader directions the firm envisions.
