NBC Universal (x2)

2025

Cover letter (one page)

Dear Sir/ Madam,

I am a second-year law student at [Redacted] and am writing to apply for the NBCUniversal Intellectual Property Legal Internship.

My desire to work at NBCUniversal revolves around the company producing stories that touch the hearts and minds of people worldwide. I aim to utilise the legal skills I have acquired through my university experience and internships to contribute to the positive work the company does.

This year-long placement will allow me to develop my skills and abilities in a way I could take into my career. The practical knowledge I would gain when working with NBCUniversal’s top-calibre lawyers on the most complex of challenges is a unique and exciting prospect. Moreover, the type of work I would be exposed to would ultimately benefit my professional development. Running recurring and ad-hoc reports on business trends and metrics particularly struck me, having founded my own commercial insights website. Having established it in October 2024, I have now grown the blog to 400 followers and 10 writers. The chance to analyse market trends in a legal light therefore motivates me to apply. Having worked with [Redacted], most of my work involved licensing agreement and rights acquisition. Also, having worked with [Redacted], a prominent global media company, I have found an appetite to work in the industry. Therefore, NBCUniversal’s industrial placement opportunity would be the ideal place to begin my professional development in the media and entertainment legal industry.

I have acquired the necessary skills to succeed on NBCUniversal’s internship. To gain relevant experience in the industry, I engaged in three selective legal internships. I have experience drafting and reviewing legal documents, which has given me keen attention to detail skills. These opportunities have also allowed me to work and connect professionally with people at all levels. To strengthen my organisational skills, I became the Social Secretary and Events Manager for my football club at university. I have developed exceptional task prioritisation skills by balancing these responsibilities with academics, demonstrating my ability to work well under pressure. Through my experiences, I have developed innate innovative traits and a strong sense of community. I firmly believe that the capabilities outlined above demonstrate my suitability for the NBCUniversal Intellectual Property Industrial Placement.

Thank you for considering my application.

Yours sincerely,

2024

Dear Hiring Manager,

My name is REDACTED and I am a third year law student at REDACTED .

I naturally love setting myself new challenges. This summer I won a Scholarship to travel to Mexico, volunteer, help rebuild schools and deliver business consultancies to local businesses in Ensenada, before reporting my findings to the British Embassy of Mexico City. I gained many confidence, resilience and cross cultural communication skills, which I am certain will leverage well to a career in media & entertainment with NBC Universal. The entertainment industry is a world that is ever-changing, particularly with the growth of content creation and AI. I have been interested in this industry for many years, and I completed a Digital Law Course with Herbert Smith Freehills to educate myself on this. Due to this, I believe I could bring a dynamic outlook and something new and beneficial to the organisation.

My interest in Employment law stems from the legal work I secured this winter, having completed a placement at both Browne Jacobson LLP. Having worked alongside the associates in multiple areas of the law confirmed the fact that Employment was for me. This was my favourite module at university, and I am beyond excited at the prospect to utilise my knowledge in an industry I have wanted to be part of for years. I heard of this position on Bright Network, a company I have been affiliated with for almost four years now. Since then, I have attended multiple events such as "Women In Tec", "Women In Leadership" "Black Women In Law" to educate myself on the legal industry alongside my degree. However, it was the Commercial Internship I completed with them that confirmed my interest for the media, entertainment industry and employment law. I am beyond excited to work with experienced professionals and learn from them on how to thrive in this field.

My career as a freelance writer I believe will also aid me on this intern program. I have co-written a legal blog, named The Student Lawyer, and secured a content writing internship with Thomas Carroll Group Plc, where I wrote bi-weekly articles on Employment law aimed at law firms and businesses from the construction, technology and hospitality sector. My freelance novel has secured 23,000 reads, a feat I am most proud of.

The company's renowned reputation as an American conglomerate was a huge factor for my motivations in applying to this internship, having admired its global expansion and been familiar with your large portfolio of networks, and been an avid viewer of some of these companies such as Bravo, E!, CNBC and DreamWorks as a teenager! It is really admirable that such a huge company would partner with Bright Network to create opportunities for students, and proud "big dreamers" like myself, who thrive on having responsibilities to thrive both individually and as a team. I look forward to be part of big projects and contribute to the team in anyway I can. My former experience as a Brand Ambassador would prove most useful to this position, as I was able to showcase my entrepreneurial spirit in this programme. My team of three women, including myself, attracted 1,200 students to sign up to Rate My Placement's brand services in just six hours in a freshers fair. This was recognised as the highest feat by a Brand Ambassador for the programme, and I was promoted to a Multi Brand Ambassador following this. I am excited to bring this same resilience to the internship.

I am beyond excited to throw myself fully in this position, and I look most forward to hearing back from you.

Best wishes,
