I had the opportunity to attend the Paul, Weiss Open Day. The Private Equity workshop provided a comprehensive overview of the various stages and processes it entails. The workshop greatly enhanced my understanding of the intersection between finance and law and interest in the fast-paced nature of private equity law.

At [redacted], I organised a large networking event during South Asian Heritage Month with some influential South Asian lawyers. This event was not only a great opportunity for me to broaden my network with successful legal professionals but also left me with invaluable advice to help achieve my career goals.

During my role in [redacted] Law Society, I hosted a commercial awareness event with Jones Day about analysing current commercial issues and building commercial awareness. I learnt analysis techniques such as PESTLE and SWOT and how to apply this to topical events such as Elon Musk’s acquisition of Twitter.

September 2024 – Present: As a student mentor, I aim to inspire and guide students pursuing a year in industry. I recorded a podcast detailing my placement year experience to provide prospective law students with practical insights and motivation. Additionally, I mentor current students on the placement programme, offering tailored advice on excelling during placements. This role has honed my public speaking, mentorship, and communication skills while allowing me to support others in achieving their goals.
September 2022 – June 2023: As Head of Careers for [redacted] Law Society, I demonstrated initiative and strategic thinking by organizing networking and panel events with law firms. I designed a comprehensive "Careers Guide" outlining career pathways and application deadlines, which significantly increased society membership and event attendance.
September 2023 – September 2024: I further developed my organisational and teamwork skills as a co-founder of the "South Asians in Law" network at [redacted] where I collaborated with colleagues to organise networking events for South Asian lawyers. My ability to communicate effectively and work collaboratively made me a reliable team player.
Music has been an integral part of my life from a young age. By the age of thirteen, I had achieved grade 8 in piano and grade 6 in harmonium. Performing live in venues such as the National Theatre taught me to thrive under pressure. Balancing the demands of rehearsals, live performances, and academic responsibilities required meticulous organisation. This experience cultivated time-management skills, self-discipline and adaptability, qualities that continue to influence my professional approach.
Which one of our core sectors interests you the most and why? (250 words)
One of Watson Farley Williams' core sectors that interests me most is Transport, particularly due to its breadth, encompassing aviation, rail, and shipping. This variety ensures a dynamic and ever-evolving practice.
My interest in this sector was sparked during my time in the Finance team at [redacted], specifically the Transport and Asset Finance sub-team. I gained valuable experience advising on aircraft leases, relocations, and rail finance transactions. These opportunities highlighted the complexity and tangible nature of transport finance, where the legal work directly impacts essential global industries. Unlike other areas of finance law, I have come across, transport and asset finance stood out to me as it frequently offered a greater opportunity to engage with a range of global stakeholders on each matter.
Another aspect of the Transport sector that appeals to me is its enduring relevance. Unlike industries facing long-term decline, such as oil and gas, transport is a cornerstone of global commerce, with strong growth potential. Market trends, including the increasing demand for sustainable transport solutions, present exciting opportunities to support clients navigating this transition. The international focus of transport work, which frequently involves multi-jurisdictional elements, further aligns with my interest in working on cross-border matters.
Additionally, WFW’s Transport team has demonstrated its expertise in advising on high-profile, international matters, such as acting as English law and maritime counsel for Virgin Voyages on its $550m capital raise. This highlights the team's ability to navigate complex, cross-border transactions - a skill set I am eager to develop further.
Describe an experience where you encountered an unexpected obstacle. How did you deal with this and what did you learn from it? (250 words)
During my time drafting documents for a finance deal, I encountered an unexpected challenge when my supervisor, went on leave, leaving me with limited supervision. This required me to take greater responsibility and manage the transaction independently.
To maintain progress, I referred to the conditions precedent (CP) checklist to guide my work and ensure all key steps were addressed. I also used this to keep the partner overseeing the detail informed about the transaction as maintaining this constant line of communication was important to ensure the partner trusted my ability to manage the transaction. When opposing counsel provided comments on draft documents, I drafted responses and sought approval from the partner before reverting. Managing this step up in responsibility also required me to balance my workload across other transactions. I achieved this by clearly communicating my capacity with colleagues, maintaining transparency to manage expectations effectively.
As the deal approached closing, I discovered that critical share certificates were missing and needed to be provided to opposing counsel within two days. Recognising the urgency, I flagged the issue to the partner and proposed a solution. I suggested that the client re-sign the share certificates and issue an indemnity for the lost certificate. The partner approved the plan, and I coordinated with the client to resolve the issue in time for closing.
This experience taught me the importance of initiative, problem-solving, and clear communication under pressure. It also demonstrated the value of proactively managing expectations and maintaining attention to detail in complex transactions.
Provide an example of when you collaborated with others to reach a goal and outline the role you played to support the team. (250 words)
In my final year of university, I participated in a group presentation for a labour law module, which required us to analyse and present on a complex legal question. Collaboration was essential to our success.
From the outset, I emphasised the importance of clear communication to ensure everyone was aligned on our goals. We held regular meetings to discuss the topic and divided the research and workload into equal parts, ensuring that each team member had ownership of a section. Throughout the process, I made it a priority to create a supportive environment where everyone felt comfortable sharing ideas and asking for help.
When some teammates struggled with their sections, I stepped in to provide assistance, whether by brainstorming solutions, offering constructive feedback or explaining concepts. This collaborative approach ensured that no one felt overwhelmed and that the quality of our work remained consistent across all sections.
In addition to contributing to my assigned section, I took on the responsibility of creating the presentation handout which summarised our key arguments and served as a visual aid for our audience. I also scheduled our meetings and ensured everyone was available, allowing us to stay on track and meet deadlines efficiently.
On the day of the presentation, our collaborative efforts paid off as we delivered a well-organised and engaging discussion. This experience taught me the importance of clear communication, adaptability and supporting others to achieve shared goals. These skills have since become central to how I approach teamwork, both academically and professionally.
Describe a time when you received constructive feedback. How did you respond? (250 words)
At the start of my placement at [redacted], I was tasked with reviewing a security agreement drafted by opposing counsel. This was a significant step up from my previous responsibilities and a complex task I had not previously encountered. After submitting my initial comments to the supervising associate, I proactively requested feedback and scheduled a call to discuss my approach.
The associate acknowledged that some of my comments were valid but noted I had missed a few key provisions and opportunities for negotiation. The key learning points for me were the importance of understanding the structure of legal documents, anticipating client priorities, and being detail-oriented to identify negotiable terms.
To address this, I reviewed similar agreements from past transactions to familiarise myself with standard provisions and the nuances of negotiable clauses. I also revisited materials from trainee and NQ training sessions I had attended, which deepened my understanding of key provisions. Using this knowledge, I redrafted the agreement, focusing on applying my improved analytical and commercial awareness skills. I then sought feedback from a trainee in the team with similar experience negotiating documents before reverting to the associate. The associate was satisfied with the updated draft which I successfully sent to opposing counsel.
Following this experience, I proactively asked the associate to be involved in similar tasks to increase my exposure to these documents and build my skills further. Additionally, I created a checklist of key considerations for future drafting and negotiations, which has already proven valuable in subsequent assignments.
2024
1. Why are you applying to WFW? In particular, which areas of our work are you interested in getting involved in? (250 words)
Watson Farley & Williams’ exceptional dispute resolution practice was a key source of motivation for applying. The variety of work completed by the commodities disputes team particularly caught my eye: this is an area I gained experience in during the [redacted] vacation scheme. Whilst working on a contentious case relating to minerals owned by a large UK landowner, I enjoyed the strategic aspects of the work, especially in the build-up to the case. However, where the work at [redacted] was in a singular jurisdiction and included a small client base, the prospect of advising on diverse, cross-border disputes cases at WFW excites me.
Considering WFW holds the world’s largest dedicated shipping practice, the opportunity to gain further insight into the nuances of shipping law is compelling. Having listened to the WFW ‘Countdown to COP’ podcast, the consequences of ESG-related legislation and the challenges of meeting industry sustainability goals is a source of particular interest.
Having met WFW representatives at the Legal Cheek Law Fair, the holistic structure of the training contract enthused me. The six-seat rotation will increase my chances of finding a specialty I am best suited to. The small intake is also very enticing and allows for considerable responsibility and client contact from the off. When this is combined with WFW’s core training programme, the experience is uniquely well-rounded. Finally, the guaranteed international secondment sets the firm apart. Given my linguistic capabilities and willingness to throw myself into new experiences, this is an opportunity which I will relish.
2. Why do you wish to pursue a career as a commercial solicitor? (250 words)
My motivations for a career in commercial law can be reduced to three central factors. Firstly, the dynamic nature of a legal career has always appealed to me; as a commercial lawyer especially, there is a necessity to acquire a breadth of knowledge and to react to the ever-changing market landscape. My innovative spirit would allow me to approach my trainee seats with flexibility and eagerness.
Another factor is the skills which facilitate a career in commercial law. The importance of written communication suits my analytical ability and attention to detail, as exemplified by my D1 English Pre-U grade and forecasted First Class [redacted] Degree. Also, the level of teamwork apparent in a full-service firm such as WFW fits my collaborative approach to tasks. As evidenced through my volunteering experiences, I excel when working in a team towards a common goal.
Finally, my experiences in commercial law have only strengthened my motivations. My time at a small tech firm sparked my interest for a legal career; given the firm’s entrepreneurial slant, I relished the client-facing nature of the work as well as the advisory aspect of a lawyer’s role. During my Commercial seat on the [redacted] vacation scheme, I found the challenges of mitigating risk particularly enjoyable and I noted the use of both case law and the business’ unique commercial situation to solve the client’s issues. This combination of theoretical and problem-solving skills echoes my motivations for the multifaceted nature of a career in commercial law.
3. Describe a time when you have pushed yourself outside of your comfort zone. (250 words)
After being selected as Student Lead of my departmental Gender Equality Initiative, despite my excitement, I felt apprehensive for a few reasons. Firstly, as the only undergraduate team member, I was fearful that I would not be able to convey my ideas and I initially lost some self-confidence. Also, as a male member of the team, I was anxious that my efforts to overcome the patriarchal nature of the university would not be taken seriously.
However, I made certain changes in my approach, both inwardly and outwardly, to make the project a success. For example, I made a strong argument to hold meetings in person rather than virtually. This gave me confidence to project my ideas and allowed me to build a more genuine relationship with my fellow team members. Over the year, I was tasked with creating staff gender equality surveys, receiving over 200% more responses than in previous years. My ability to collaborate with senior team members was crucial to this success; I was able to understand gender equality issues from their perspective and create a pertinent survey.
There were a few key lessons I learnt about myself through this experience. Firstly, I discovered that the feeling of accomplishment which comes from making a difference is worth the challenges of adjusting to a new environment. Also, in terms of my own method, I learnt that the best way to avoid self-doubt is to apply full dedication and enthusiasm.
4. Describe a time when you received constructive feedback. How did you respond? (250 words)
During the pandemic, I worked as a sales associate for a sustainable food business. Having impressed with my leadership and interpersonal skills, I was granted the opportunity to run the sales effort at a trade fair at the age of just 18. After making an underwhelming number of sales, partially due to my nerves, I received feedback from a senior colleague. She told me that my sales technique was too reserved and static; I appreciated that I was trying too hard to sell the physical product rather than strike up a rapport with potential clients.
I was naturally disappointed and was eager to set this right at the next fair, a week later. I took the initiative and decided to walk around and pitch to the prospective clients. It was a test of my self-confidence and resilience, but I grew more assured as I made more sales. In the end, I made over 170 sales and ended up beginning a recipe collaboration with one of the other businesses present. This collaboration made a considerable impact on the brand’s business network and social media presence, something that was critically important to them during a period of such turbulence.
Upon reflection, this experience was a useful learning experience. Having to overcome that feeling of failure in a high-pressure environment, especially from someone who had placed their trust in me, was a real challenge. It proved to me that responding to feedback positively with actions rather than emotions was the right response.
5. WFW is dedicated to client care. Please tell us why a client-focused role is important to you and when you have demonstrated great client or customer service. (250 words)
As detailed in my motivations, the client-facing aspect of a commercial solicitor’s role was a crucial factor in my initial passion for law. Client-focused work presents opportunities to build deep connections that will impact the trajectories of myself and the firm; this sense that every relationship matters really appeals to my interpersonal skills.
Also, client-facing work allows for insights into a wide range of businesses. From my experience working on premium deals at [redacted] and mid-market deals at [redacted], I found that the latter have a far more entrepreneurial, client-centric aspect. WFW’s mid-market eminence allows lawyers to work with clients who are passionate about their businesses rather than those simply finding a means to an end.
As a Fleet Controller at the [redacted], I executed a high level of client service. In order to perform to the levels expected by worldwide stars, I would always go the extra mile. One example of this was when I worked three hours overtime to oversee a bag being returned to its owner who was catching an imminent flight. My managing role also taught me that client service is about more than face-to-face interaction. Directing a 15-man bookings team and a 500-car fleet meant that the most crucial aspect to my success was organisation and preparation. This mirrors the role of a lawyer: the time spent advising the client is inherently crucial, but it is the preparatory work put in to understand the client’s situation that determines the level of service.
2024
Why WFW
Watson Farley & Williams’ unique training contract structure of six seats allows for greater diversity of training, something which appeals to me in ensuring I have a variety of experiences. The guarantee of an international secondment would give me the opportunity to use the Spanish legal skills I have developed on my year abroad at the Madrid office. The firm's international outlook to commercial law aligns with my studying of international law, an integrated network provides diverse career prospects.
I have developed an interest in the aviation industry as it is constantly evolving, occurring on a multi-jurisdictional level and operating across practice areas. WFW’s transport focus is engaging, especially their innovative technology - including their new version of the “Global Aviation Resource Index” launching this year. The addition of data regarding repossession rights demonstrates this evolving nature, responding to the grounding of aircraft in Russia as a result of the Russia-Ukraine conflict. The training contract including a compulsory seat in asset finance would allow me to pursue this interest further.
WFW’s work in renewables is unparalleled, recently advising DIF Capital Partners on the financing of solar generation and battery storage assets. Considering a trend towards investing in renewable energy, there is a growing demand in financing these projects. Seeing this work further develop, with more complex structuring due to adverse market conditions, would be an interesting training prospect. The London office being powered through renewable electricity demonstrates this at a cultural level, something I appreciate having organised sustainability projects concerning solar energy.
Why commercial law
Through debating, I have come face-to-face with a variety of commercial issues, and considered the potential implications of these on wider society and different industries. This has developed my interest in the consequences of applying legal framework to business facing issues, and then considering the long term implications and potential benefits of doing so. Attending an ESG ‘The future of law’ panel introduced me to the idea of how commercial lawyers often seek to future-proof businesses through these legal frameworks, thus distinguishing themselves from the more typical regulatory work that in house-lawyers might perform. I then put this into practice while completing the Clifford Chance ‘Sustainable Finance’ virtual internship through tasks such as navigating Environmental Risk Management Guidelines and assisting with a Loan Default.
Studying Law and Spanish in Madrid this year, I have had a first-hand opportunity to develop my knowledge of international markets and legal systems and consider how they interact with international trends and legislation. This cross-jurisdictional aspect fascinates me, that legislation in the EU can impact businesses operating internally and externally, like with the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive. Furthermore, the additional challenges that operate at a multi-jurisdictional level brings are engaging, seeing how commercial lawyers can enact this idea of future-proofing to enable businesses to succeed internationally.
I have further developed my commercial skills alongside communication and editing skills by participating in the Aspiring Solicitors Commercial Awareness Competition, and through contributing to the Commercial Awareness society newsletter.
Describe a time when you have pushed yourself outside of your comfort zone
Starting university, I was interested in debating, but I did not know anyone else interested in joining. Being in a new environment alone for the first time intimidated me, so I spent the first semester in my comfort zone and not attending. I kept up with the society online, and I decided I needed to join.
I set myself two rules, I had to try it for a month and I had to actively participate in every session. Every Tuesday for a month I would go and ask questions, start talking to people and then join in with a practice debate. Getting involved meant doing more than just participating in a debate but also ensuring I integrated myself into the society and got to know the people.
After enjoying it, I committed to debating and began attending tournaments at a Regional, National and, this year, European level. My commitment was rewarded by being selected as Public Relations Officer for my second year.
I discovered I really enjoy meeting new people, especially in an environment where there are so many different opinions, beliefs and interests. It has opened me to a variety of new perspectives and developed my ability to listen and learn from other people. I enjoyed challenging myself and setting myself new goals. It has developed my confidence to try things, outwith my comfort zone. I also found learning a new skill stimulating, rather than something to get frustrated with and give up on.
Describe a time where you received constructive feedback. How did you respond?
As Assistant Tennis Coach at the [redacted university], I lead sessions for a variety of playing abilities. I received a piece of feedback that my explanations of drills were pitched at too high a level. In my demonstrations, I tended to use technical phrases that my advanced group would understand but my intermediate and beginner groups struggled to grasp. This meant players would begin their drills still not entirely understanding the learning points and key areas of focus.
I had to adapt my communication style to make it more accessible for players. This meant taking time to consider which phrases were specifically causing problems and then finding alternatives. I watched videos of professional coaches to see the language they used, as well as reaching out to my network to see how they simplified the technical details. I also ensured I was actively considering how to further explain what I meant, rather than just simplify my language. Furthermore, I developed demonstrations that walked through the key parts of the technique, alongside developing explanations for phrases such as “top-spin” so my players also learnt something new.
The result was that players entered these drills with a much clearer understanding of what to work on and develop. When they understood my explanations, they were able to see quicker progress in their tennis and ultimately leave the session feeling more fulfilled than before. It also provided me the opportunity to better myself and my own skills as a coach.
WFW is dedicated to client care. Please tell us why a client focused role is important to you and when you have demonstrated great client or customer service.
Commercial law is focused on providing solutions for a client rather than simply providing a service. Building a client relationship is vital to ensuring you provide appropriate short-term and long-term solutions for the client. This provision of high-quality solutions is something that appeals to me, as solving problems and making a client's life easier is fulfilling. People make business through their engagement with the markets and services involved, so their fulfilment is key to success.
Through running the social media for a local salon chain, clients previously felt they did not always know of deals that were happening and the full range of services provided. I set out to deliver high quality posts and stories that advertised everything that was available. This included setting up new platforms to ensure all our clients could access us, and navigating the advertising tools across platforms to establish a wider reach. I reshared pictures that clients posted to further develop a relationship, making them feel connected and appreciated. Interacting organically when clients tagged us or commented ensured the entire experience was enjoyable. I provided not just a service, but also a solution to their problems, whilst prioritising a strong relationship.
I have carried this approach through my roles as PR Officer for Glasgow’s Debating and the Dialectic societies. Attending talks such as “Responsible Business” and “The Business behind Client Relationships” have developed this even further. These talks provided a legal outlook to sustaining these key relationships and considering what is best for a client.
2023

I am passionate about voluntary work and finding ways to provide genuinely effective help to others through dedicating time and effort rather than simply making financial donations to third-party organisations.
At university, I worked as a volunteer tutor for [redacted tutoring organisation], an educational charity which provides supplementary tuition to disadvantaged children from migrant backgrounds, from November 2019 until I graduated in [redacted graduation date]. I gave weekly lessons to Syrian refugee children at their school in Bristol. My pupils had undergone traumatic experiences prior to arriving in the UK, and I had to work hard to earn their trust. When the first lockdown was imposed, I helped to codify procedures which allowed lessons to continue online for the remainder of the pandemic whilst staying compliant with safeguarding regulations.
In November of 2022, I was chosen as Student Director for the [redacted university]’s Legal Advice Clinics. It is fulfilling to be able to provide palpable help to vulnerable individuals facing legal difficulties, despite being only a PGDL student. Managing the team has tested my organisational skills, as I keep track of rotas and ensure the online case management system is kept updated.
I also enjoy team sports and joined the university rugby club in 2018, despite never having played the sport before. I had to show extra dedication to earn my place on the team and was named Coach's Player of the Year in the 2018/19 season. Since graduating, I have joined a five-a-side football team and play in tournaments.
Why are you applying to WFW? (250)
WFW stands out for its very focused sector-based approach. Assisting clients with commercial due diligence in M&A transactions at XXX, I have seen the importance of understanding the client's industry to add value. Compared to other city law firms, training at WFW would allow me to become a true expert in the energy and transport industries and learn how to apply this deep sector knowledge to tailor legal advice.
Having worked at a leading commercial chambers focused on maritime law, I am drawn to the firm's market-leading practice in this area. I am fascinated by maritime law's history of setting precedents in contract law and know that WFW would allow me to work on some of the most complex and interesting cases. For example, the firm advised Citibank N.A. and HSBC Bank on two innovative blended finance arrangements for Seaspan.
I particularly enjoyed working on cross-border deals at XXX and am attracted by the firm's global presence. I am excited that the firms' sectors are international in nature, ensuring access to cross-border work. WFW is also unique in guaranteeing trainees an international secondment.
Having experienced M&A at XXX and contentious matters during my internships, I am drawn to WFW's six-seat training contract. This will enable me to make a more informed choice when I qualify. Reading testimonials from current trainees on the firm's website and Legal Cheek, I was impressed by the culture of giving trainees real responsibility early on. This would provide me with the best learning environment.
Why do you wish to pursue a career as a commercial solicitor? (250)
I enjoy solving problems for clients, drawing on my analytical skills and commercial mindset.
My undergraduate degree helped me develop the ability to evaluate information from multiple sources, form detailed arguments and present them effectively. These came to the fore in my dissertation, which was awarded a Distinction and selected for publication by the university. I performed more complex research while interning at a leading commercial chambers in London and assisting judges at a German regional court, also gaining experience of legal drafting. As Student Director for [redacted university]’s Legal Advice Clinic, I provide written advice for pro bono clients.
In order to fund my PGDL and gain commercial experience, I worked for a year at XXX, an expert network which supports due diligence in M&A transactions. My work involved gathering and verifying information for demanding clients, including major corporations and private equity firms. I had to quickly grasp the fundamentals of new industries with each project. At open days, I have been interested to hear from lawyers about the importance of understanding the client’s sector when providing legal advice.
I enjoyed the fast-paced environment of live deals and the satisfaction of adding value to my clients as they pursued strategic opportunities. However, this work lacked the analytical rigour of commercial law. I am keen to combine my client service experience and commercial awareness with my analytical and reasoning skills to solve more complex issues for companies as they develop their businesses.
Tell us about a recent goal that you worked towards. How did you make it happen, and what did you learn? (250)
Soon after joining XXX, I set myself the goal of being promoted to project lead as quickly as possible. This was for two reasons. First, managing projects would allow me to work directly with the high-profile clients my team supported, which I found very exciting. The second reason was that it would allow me to work more efficiently. My team was understaffed, with the overburdened project leads struggling to keep on top of the number of cases they were assigned. As a result, they were often slow to foreword my work to clients.
In order to achieve this goal, I expressed my interest in wanting more client contact and asked to gradually take on more responsibility, such as sitting in on meetings and drafting client reports. This allowed me to learn the skills needed to take on the role. I then spotted an opportunity to gain the promotion during a hectic period. The team was especially short-staffed, with many still on holiday or ill with Covid 19. It was clear that management would need additional support. I approached my V.P. and offered to help by leading projects. The V.P. was hesitant as I had yet to complete my six-month probation period. I negotiated a compromise, which allowed me to gain the promotion on the condition that I gave daily updates on all my projects. This experience taught me the importance of proactively seeking out opportunities to take on responsibility, as this is the best way to learn.
You are a trainee solicitor, working in the office and it is 6.30pm. You have an important personal appointment at 7pm. You are updating a document ready for a client meeting which will take place at 10am the next day. As this is a new client it is important that the firm impresses them and accuracy is key. You are waiting on some information from a third party before you can finalise the document. You have also received several emails from other fee-earners in the department asking you to help them on some urgent tasks. Your supervisor is working from home. What do you do? (250)
Effective time management would be essential in this situation. I would start by contacting the third party, giving a gentle reminder that I still required some information. I would stress the deadline and ask when I could expect to hear back. I would also reply to the fee-earners, letting them know my current capacity and asking for further information on the tasks I could help with. With this information, I would be able to rank my tasks by urgency and assess if it was possible to assist all the fee earners. If not, I would reach out to other trainees and colleagues at the firm and ask if they had spare capacity.
Preparing for the client meeting would likely be the first priority. If I could not reschedule my 7 pm appointment, I would complete as much of the document as possible without the additional information. I would send a copy to my supervisor, asking for any feedback on my work so far. Once completed, I would focus on any tasks sent by my colleagues that I could finish before 7 pm. After my appointment, I would hopefully have received the information and would finalise the document, incorporating the recommendations made by my supervisor. If I had not heard back from the third party, I would follow up again and inform a more senior colleague. I would spend the rest of the evening completing my other tasks, leaving the less urgent ones for the next day.
Tell us about a time when you worked successfully as part of a team. How might you benefit from this experience in your career at WFW? (250)
When I started university, I was determined to secure a place on the university rugby team. I had always wanted to play rugby, but the schools I attended did not offer it. So, despite no prior experience, I undertook trials and made it onto one of the teams. Once training started, it was quickly apparent that I was the only novice in a team of experienced players.
Although initially disheartened, I worked as hard as possible to develop the skills required to make a meaningful contribution to the team. I spent my free time, alongside the prescribed training regimen, learning the basics of the game to attain a level of knowledge which the rest of the team took for granted. I never missed any of the three weekly practice sessions, even when others felt able to skip training, perhaps because exams were coming up or the weather was particularly bad. I persuaded teammates to join me in arriving early for each session so we could work on some basic exercises before the others arrived. With their help, I made rapid progress during the season and was moved from the bench onto the starting line-up for matches. My dedication and resilience were recognised following the 2019/20 season when I was named Coach's Player of the Year. A key motivator was not wanting to let my teammates down: they had taken a risk with me as a novice player and I was determined to repay their trust.
2022
Outside of employment or work experience, please tell us about any positions of responsibility you have held which you would like to highlight. (250 words)
At university, I was appointed as the Press Team Lead for [redacted] Model United Nations Society. I led a group of 15 members in content creation to promote the society and its annual conference and oversaw the content creation of advertisement material for the society. I also strategically allocated roles according to members' individual skillset. However, during the year, I observed that the new and younger members struggled to integrate and participate during group meetings. It became evident their lack of participation impacted the high level of collaboration that the group largely depended on. In response, I frequently organised social events centred around communication and relationship building. This maximised the overall efficiency of the team, resulting in a sold-out conference.
During sixth-form, I was elected by 3,500 students as the Community Links Officer into the Student Association, a team of 10 officers responsible for representing the student body. Having experienced the benefits of integration when I moved to the UK at a young age in enhancing my cultural awareness and widening my network, I hoped to replicate this experience on campus. Therefore, I reached out to students from different backgrounds to discuss ways of increasing cultural awareness. After, I organised Cultural Awareness Evening where students showcased their cultures through creative performances. Despite having left sixth-form the following year, the event has since become a recurring event. As a result of this, I believe, notions of mutual respect and integration between students at the sixth-form has and will be further entrenched.
What do you enjoy doing in your spare time? (250 words)
I am passionate about volunteering. I previously volunteered at a youth centre that supports young people from disadvantaged backgrounds. I established close relationships with the attendees and ensured to provide a safe and nurturing environment for the children. During my year abroad in [redacted Asian city], I volunteered at [redacted charity], a local charity that helps vulnerable migrant women and children, often vulnerable to abuse, get access to legal justice once a week. Here, emotional intelligence was key. By managing my emotions whilst simultaneously engaging with clients issues in a rational manner, I provided excellent service to those in need.
As an inquisitive and adventurous person, I have a keen interest in travelling. During my year abroad, I made several solo trips to different cities around Asia. This entailed strict self-discipline to budget my finances; I made thorough plans in advance and managed my expenses carefully. As the global nature of business today has increased the demand for a high level of collaboration with colleagues and clients from different jurisdictions, the open and adaptable mindset I developed will be key to building relationships globally.
Outside of academia, my hobbies and interests include photography and videography. I utilised such interests by previously freelancing as a photographer for societies at university. I negotiated flexible terms and rates to tailor my service according to each societies’ needs and budget. From this, I built a portfolio of my work - I have since been invited to take photos for local, small to medium size social events.
Why do you wish to pursue a career as a commercial solicitor? (250 words)
My interest in commerce stems from my previously held part-time jobs. I experienced making commercial decisions, such as strategies to compete cost-efficiently, while working at a local takeaway. In accordance with the existing difficulties in the retail sector, I witnessed the challenges businesses can face while working at [redacted supermarket chain]. It was interesting to note from both experiences that customer loyalty was key in defining their long term success. Applying this knowledge to an open day M&A exercise, I negotiated a high sale price by leveraging the popularity of the client’s brand, gaining experience of the processes involved in a large corporate deal. Thus, my interest grew for the highly competitive and complex work involved in commercial law.
Additionally, my experience at Citizens Advice offered me an in-depth insight into a career in law, as I spent several months advising clients on a range of topics. The high level of responsibility to ensure every client's needs were met allowed me to develop a strong appreciation for the work lawyers do. It is this desire to help clients solve their most challenging multi-jurisdictional problems, coupled with my commercial drive, that has solidified my motivation to pursue a career as a commercial lawyer.

With clients increasingly demanding services that are more for less, having astute commercial awareness of the sector they are operating in, I believe, is crucial. By working alongside industry-experts, I, too, will develop the skills and knowledge to provide leading commercial and legal advice to clients. I am also drawn by WFW’s energy groups extensive work on green bonds for longstanding clients such as AMP Capital and ADIF-Alta Velocidad. This demonstrates the exciting opportunities offered to work on important international developments.
I am especially interested in joining a firm that shares my global mindset - this is evidenced at WFW through its guaranteed international secondment. I experienced the benefits of an international network in developing my adaptability skills as an exchange student in [redacted Asian city] and an intern in Nepal. Tell us about an achievement that has made you proud. How did you make it happen? (250 words)
My successful climb to Mount. Kilimanjaro in September 2018 is an achievement I am particularly proud of.
Having never undertaken a challenge of this scale before, I ensured I was adequately prepared for the 6 day trek by adopting a new fitness routine throughout the year. In order to do this, I disciplined myself into going for runs twice a week to increase my stamina and went to the gym three days a week.
During the trek, team-work was key. As some team members began to struggle with severe altitude sickness with our destination at 5,895m above sea level, I initiated the distribution of the weight from their bags throughout the team to ease their climb. By demonstrating to each other such physical and emotional support, this also improved the group morale and encouraged each member to continue trying their best. In addition, empathising with group members was also essential. With the activity being undertaken for various reasons, such as to gain a new challenging experience or to mark an important life event, the ability to understand other peoples goals fostered a supportive group environment where those goals were met.
In order to overcome additional challenges, such as almost 60 hours of trekking and turbulent weather, mental endurance was crucial. Whilst at times the physical pain and discomfort was overbearing, I remained focused on my goal of reaching the top and instead, slowed my pace and took the necessary supplements to gain more energy that allowed me to continue walking.
Describe a time when you were working as part of a team where conflict arose. (250 words)
During my internship in Nepal, a client felt demotivated 5 days into her trek and did not think she was able to carry on. However, I disagreed with the ground agents who were responsible for the guides, [redacted hiking tour company], who suggested to bring the client and her guide down from the mountain.
First, I set up a phone call with the managing director of [redacted hiking tour company] and asked about the company's reasoning for such decision; I learned there was a need to make every guide available, if possible, to meet the demands of the peak season for trekkers in the Himalayas. In response, I argued the client needed more encouragement. Whilst the ground agents dealt with hundreds of trekkers during the high season, it is often a once in a lifetime experience for the client. Following this conversation, we agreed to allow the client to continue and make her own decision.
I learnt that by asking questions first, I avoided making assumptions. Through this, I saw the situation from a different perspective, such as the business need to bring the guide down. Additionally, if it is a matter I feel strongly about, I should confidently speak up as this, in turn, also allowed the other party to gain an alternative understanding. I also learnt the importance of being proactive when dealing with a disagreement. For instance, by instinctively making the call to the managing director, the group did not escalate the wrong decision further and risk providing bad customer service.
Describe a time when you had to be particularly well organised to meet a challenging deadline. (250 words)
Prior to climbing Mount. Kilimanjaro, I also had a target to meet a fundraising deadline of £3000 for Meningitis Research Foundation in the summer. However, in addition to this and my studies, I also balanced two part-time jobs and a leadership role at university.
To achieve my target, I planned ahead in advance by setting monthly, personal goals throughout the year. I began by conducting bucket collections in different cities during my weekends. However, I quickly realised I was not raising enough to meet my monthly targets. Thus, I considered alternative methods to fundraise. I sought sponsorship from local organisations; I contacted their executive members and organised meetings to explain my objective. As a result, I raised over 60% of my total through this method in a shorter time frame, whilst exceeding my target of £3,000 with a total of £3,393.
I believe my strategy to organise my fundraising plan in advance proved to be highly beneficial. Firstly, I was able to structure my time more effectively and ensure my wider commitments received the appropriate amount of attention and time. In doing so, I also made sure to have time dedicated to fundraising. Additionally, focusing on the smaller targets allowed me to adapt to any difficulties that arose during the process more easily; if I did not have targets to track throughout the process, the amount that needed to be raised close to the deadline could have amalgamated into a bigger sum, making it difficult to ultimately meet my goal.
