Receiving the Academic Excellence prize whilst undertaking the rigorous International Baccalaureate curriculum was a significant milestone in my academic journey. This award was won by continuously maintaining my dedication and academic position within my cohort, whilst also juggling various work experiences and extracurricular activities that would propel me towards a career in the legal industry.

I was an Executive Board member of [Redacted], the largest youth-led charitable organisation in [Redacted]. One of my significant achievements was spearheading a maternity drive aimed at providing essential healthcare resources to impoverished women in rural regions. This drive surpassed our expectations by providing vital healthcare toolkits to 200 women. The initiative improved the health and well-being of these women and highlighted the power of collaborative efforts in addressing critical social issues.

Furthermore, as a project leader for Avenue to Law, a pro bono initiative aligned with [Redacted] Law Society, I'm part of an effort to dismantle barriers and cultivate equitable opportunities for individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds aspiring to pursue a career in law. During my university term, I started taking Thai boxing classes weekly as part of my commitment to staying fit and active. This experience has taught me the importance of discipline, resilience, and the value of stepping outside my comfort zone. Additionally, maintaining a consistent gym routine has further reinforced the significance of self-discipline and incorporating fitness into my daily lifestyle, helping me build both physical and mental strength.

Additionally, I've been an active member of the [Redacted] Asian Society and the [Redacted] East African Society, which have been integral to maintaining a strong connection with my cultural roots. My involvement has included attending and planning various societal events, organising cultural workshops, leading discussion groups on cultural issues, as well as mentoring younger members. Being part of these societies has allowed me to immerse myself in communities that celebrate and uphold the values and traditions that are important to me.

I firmly believe that making a positive impact is crucial, no matter the scale of the effort. Every summer since 2023, I have embraced this principle through my volunteer work at the [Redacted]. My motivation to apply for Skadden’s vacation scheme stems from its outstanding reputation across practice areas, impressive transactional strength with high-calibre clients, and their significant international presence.

Skadden’s work in international arbitration is impressive, reflected by its Tier 1 ranking by Chambers UK. Having studied international and international economic law, I am drawn to Skadden’s practice for its alignment with my academic focus and interest in resolving complex international disputes. Skadden’s landmark case of Kardassopoulos v. Georgia highlights the firm’s ability to establish global jurisdictional precedence and shape the international law framework. This is coupled with their transactional strength, reflected in high-profile cases such as Elon Musk’s acquisition of Twitter and the sale of Tom Ford to Estée Lauder. Skadden offers unparalleled opportunities for trainees to work on deals of exceptional scope, serving as principal advisor on over 200 deals worth $221 billion in 2023.

Their commitment to pro bono work and social change further appeals to me. The firm’s 1,800-hour billable requirement, including unlimited pro bono work, allows trainees to engage in meaningful initiatives without sacrificing professional development. I am interested in Skadden’s Domestic Violence Impact Project Group, which aligns with my internship at [Redacted], a non-profit in [Redacted] providing legal aid to disadvantaged women.

If you could choose a career other than law, what would you choose? (250 words)

If I were to choose a career other than law, I would opt for management consulting. In management consulting, professionals are deeply involved in addressing the specific challenges faced by businesses. The role similarly requires applying business acumen to address organisational problems, improve operational effectiveness, and stimulate strategic growth.

Consulting, like the legal practice, entails close collaboration with clients to comprehend their needs, create tailored solutions, and implement strategies that improve overall performance. Building and maintaining strong client relationships is crucial, as it enables consultants to effectively recognise pressure points and provide impactful solutions.

However, law offers unique benefits that management consulting does not fully replicate. The legal practice is more technical, requiring detailed analysis of statutes, regulations, and relevant case law. My skillset allows me to excel in this field, as I am adept at scrutinising the fine print and addressing detailed aspects of legal documents, as evidenced during my tenure at esteemed law firms. This technical aspect allows for a deeper exploration of legal principles and their practical applications, providing a level of expertise and insight that differs from the broader, business-focused perspective of consulting.

While management consulting would be my next best choice due to its problem-solving nature and client-centric approach, it does not completely replace the technical and detailed engagement found in law. The opportunity to delve into intricate legal issues while offering precise, nuanced advice remains a distinctive and compelling aspect of the legal profession.

Please choose a recent (less than 12 months) development in UK/European news. How are such developments relevant for Skadden’s clients? (250 words)

In March 2024, the European Union introduced the Artificial Intelligence (AI) Act, a groundbreaking piece of legislation representing the first comprehensive regulatory framework for AI by a major body. This Act establishes a risk-based approach to AI governance, categorising applications into four risk levels and imposing rigorous requirements on high-risk applications, such as those used in financial services.

The AI Act is relevant for Skadden’s clients, particularly in the financial services sector, where generative AI is increasingly adopted for automated trading, credit-worthiness and risk assessment, and customer service. As financial institutions integrate these technologies, they encounter complex legal and technical challenges that the AI Act addresses.

The Act’s implementation has profound implications for financial institutions. First, it requires these institutions to undergo substantial restructuring to align with the new regulatory standards. This restructuring includes revising data management practices to ensure transparency and accountability and integrating advanced cybersecurity measures to safeguard against vulnerabilities. Additionally, this requires conducting regular risk assessments and providing training to employees on the obligations associated with the use of AI systems.

The Act also impacts how financial institutions approach innovation. While it fosters the responsible development and deployment of AI technologies, it also imposes constraints that influence strategic decisions. Skadden’s clients will benefit from guidance on navigating these regulatory demands, ensuring their AI systems comply with legal standards and leverage emerging opportunities within a regulated framework. My achievements are diverse but underscore my commitment to excellence, leadership, social impact and thus ability to contribute meaningfully to Skadden’s dynamic environment and socially impactful culture: 

- As a reserve Grand Finalist in the highly competitive Aspiring Solicitors Commercial Awareness Competition 2023, I participated in the semi-finals at Skadden's offices, a significant accomplishment reflecting my dedication to business awareness and professional growth.

- The receipt of two Exceptional Performance Awards in the past year alone highlights my effectiveness, capability and commitment to excellence. Notably, orchestrating the [xxx] speech in July 2023 and securing a £xx million funding package in March 2023 demonstrate my leadership in navigating multifaceted challenges within fiscal constraints.

- In central [xxx] roles, I have held pivotal responsibilities, including developing economic growth policies, contributing to the [xxx] trade negotiations, and spearheading the [xxx] programme. Completing the prestigious [graduate programme] further developed my strategic capability and leadership.

I am deeply committed to fostering diversity in the legal sector and social mobility more widely. Recently assuming a Trustee position at [xxx], a charity dedicated to enhancing access to the Bar, resonates deeply with my goal of promoting diversity and social inclusion, particularly in the legal profession. Contribution to this cause brings me fulfilment as I steer my career aspirations towards the legal arena. 

My dedication to community service extends to mentoring a young refugee at the [xxx], an opportunity I embraced to give back to my community, and supporting at a homelessness soup kitchen. Additionally, fundraising for mental health charities and engagement with mental health organisations like [xxx] reflects my interest in promoting mental wellbeing within society. 

Beyond my volunteering, mountaineering is a key prominent passion for me. Conquering the Yorkshire three peaks earlier this year and subsequently summiting Mount Kilimanjaro in 2022 were both defining challenges. These experiences tested my resilience and ability to lead under pressure, particularly evident during the ascent of Kilimanjaro when motivating the team during challenging moments. Employing strategies such as engaging the team with uplifting songs and distributing treats significantly bolstered morale and cohesion. 

Complementing my mountaineering interests, I actively participate in a community bouldering group. This not only provides exercise but I particularly enjoy the learning environment it fosters where members support and learn from each other. I find the problem-solving required during challenging climbs and the exchange of knowledge within the group particularly rewarding.

Why are you applying for a training contract at Skadden and why do you believe you are suited to the firm? (300 words)

I am applying to Skadden for three key reasons. 

Firstly, Skadden's reputation as an M&A powerhouse, evident in groundbreaking deals like the Microsoft/Activision acquisition, coupled with top Chambers rankings, significantly appeals to me. The intensity and multifaceted nature of M&A (and wider transactional work) aligns with my strengths and where I derive professional fulfilment, as demonstrated in my delivery of the [xxx] strategy – an incredibly challenging project to deliver which resulted in my receipt of an exceptional performance award because of my commitment in going beyond to get the project over the line. This was in tandem with receiving distinctions in my second year at university, demonstrating my strong resilience and dedication to delivering outcomes, which is needed for the intensity of the work at Skadden because of the significance of the deals. My attraction to transactional work more broadly is why I have selected to sit in M&A in an upcoming Vacation Scheme to deepen my experience of the practise. 

Secondly, Skadden’s global focus and US headquarters is an attraction for me. Having navigated cross-border complexities while working on [xxx] international trade and developed the [xxx] strategy, I seek a similar global focus in my training contract, where my experience means I am well-equipped to handle the challenges of an international landscape.

In my first year at [university], I was awarded the [academic prize] for the most distinguished student in the European History course. The following year, my course essay was used as an exemplar for students. I maintained a high academic standard (69% average) in my second year, alongside positions of responsibility such as acting as the class representative for African and Asian History. Consequently, I secured a place at the highly competitive [university] for a study abroad programme in my third year. While there, I appeared on the Dean's Honours List in the Fall and Spring quarters and achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.9. I also interned alongside my studies with the [student-led research group] for six months as Coalitions Coordinator for the New Voters Project. When I returned to [university] for my final year, I sat on the [university society] committee as [role]. I received the [university] Award for Global Citizenship for my work with the programme.

After graduating, I was supported by [university grant] to participate in the Summer Programme on the United Nations [at x university]. In September 2020, I began the PGDL at BPP University. I was awarded a Career Commitment Scholarship which was doubled in value due to the strength of my application, which demonstrated my aptitude for a legal career, strong work ethic, academic excellence, and commitment to the legal profession.

I enjoy staying active, and after completing my Gold DofE expedition in [African country] in 2014, I have tried to organise hiking trips when I can. At the beginning of lockdown, I challenged myself to complete the Couch to 5K programme. I have never been a keen runner, but I found myself motivated by the structured training programme. I began to look forward to my runs, not least because they were an excuse to get out of the house as I was no longer commuting to work every day. After nine weeks, I felt proud to be able to run a 5K without stopping.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, having studied English Literature for my undergraduate degree, I spend a lot of my free time reading. As much as I enjoy becoming engrossed in the fictional world of a novel, more recently I have been gravitating towards non-fiction works as I find them easier to dip in and out of when I have less time to spare. I have particularly enjoyed combining my interest in business with reading, in books like John Carreyrou's Bad Blood.

I am also trying to expand my language skills. I studied French to GCSE-level at school and have been utilising the app Duolingo as a convenient way to practise a little each day. I have also enrolled in a British Sign Language course, which I think will be a real challenge as it is so different to anything that I have tried to learn before.

A vacation scheme at Skadden, which offers the opportunity to gain exposure to two practice areas, and training contract with compulsory seats in corporate and litigation, appeals to my multi-disciplinary background, having studied joint honours. The balance between corporate (Skadden’s largest practice area by partner headcount), and litigation (next largest) would allow me as a trainee interested in both practices to gain exposure in transactional and contentious work at an early stage in my training. Moreover, Skadden's reputation for undertaking complex matters for high-calibre clients (having represented 50% of the Fortune250) drew me to apply. As a leading firm in international arbitration, Skadden offers incomparable opportunities for its trainees, working on high-value matters like the enforcement of the largest ever investment treaty award (£290m) in the renewable energy sector worldwide. Finally, Skadden’s international links, particularly the trainee secondment opportunities, appeal to me as I am keen to build upon my experiences of studying abroad in a professional context.

I believe I am suited to Skadden because the firm's training style and culture align with my strengths and values. Skadden's small trainee intake, which enables close access to senior colleagues and high levels of responsibility, appeals because I enjoy seizing opportunities for self-development. During my internship at [executive consulting firm], I volunteered to take on more responsibility in order to gain exposure to areas I was interested in. For example, I learnt how to use software that tracked market activity because I was keen to learn more about the business relationships with private equity and venture capital firms.
