Tell us about a time you have exceeded expectations in your work and/or study.
This summer, I worked for [redacted], an NGO that aims to solve problems for local communities in the rural parts of Karnataka, India. I worked with them to help small coffee planters in the region, reduce their operational costs. Their main source of irrigation for the planters was rainwater but due to a shortage of rainfall, irrigation had become expensive which increased their operational costs substantially. During my survey of over 100 coffee planters, I identified that coffee plants were being over-irrigated leading to excessive water usage and increased costs.
I decided to tackle the over-irrigation problem. The challenges were to come up with a creative, cost-effective solution to help small planters save water and reduce costs. To respond to the challenges, I designed an Arduino-programmed sensor which calculated the aridity of the soil with respect to the irrigation needs of a coffee plant. I attached the sensor to the valve of the drip irrigation systems, and it would then shut the water flow when the crops were irrigated. I went beyond what was expected of me and I applied for a government fund to make the sensor affordable for the planters. With the fund money, I managed to subsidise the price for each sensor to £10. Over 75 coffee planters implemented my solution. On average, it helped save 660 gallons of water per acre, which translated into a £500 cheaper irrigation cost for the planters per acre.
Tell us about responsibilities you have taken on outside of work and/or study.
As the Head of Research for the [redacted], I was responsible for developing a comprehensive careers guide and a law firm applications tracker for our members. The careers guide outlines 20 suitable careers for a law student and the law firm application tracker outlines the application process, key practice areas and deadlines for 80 city law firms. Developing these guides is a personal achievement for me as I expanded my knowledge of commercial law and employability in the legal sector while improving my research and drafting skills. I was motivated to create these guides to help law students gain access to this invaluable information since I did not have access to such content in my first year at university. I collaborated effectively with the marketing department of the society to enhance the visual appeal of the guides and increase their reach among students.
I have a keen interest in mooting and negotiation. In my 1st year at university, I participated in six mooting and negotiation competitions. My personal achievements were winning the [redacted] Moot and reaching the semi-finals of the [redacted] Mooting Competition (with over 120 participants), held at the Royal Court of Justice. In 2019, I was elected onto a sustainability society entitled [redacted Russell Group university society]. The society hosted events which took over the entire student’s union in a bid to raise awareness for climate change. As the publicity officer, I was responsible for leading the marketing campaigns for the society. I successfully did this given that the event was sold out with over 200 attendees. On the day of the event, I was responsible for setting up the decorations and distributing the promotional materials.
However, the morning of the event the host cancelled, and the president asked if someone would step in. I was initially nervous, but I volunteered to host as my team members did not feel comfortable doing it. I had to be organised because I had two roles to take on for the evening. I arrived at the event 30 minutes earlier to arrange the decorations. Due to my new responsibilities, I drew a floorplan of the venue and delegated where to put up specific decorations. This is because I needed ample time to learn the line-up of the acts and write an introductory speech. I utilised my team’s strengths to finalise my initial tasks, as I prepared to host. Through proactiveness, organisation, and teamwork, the event was a huge success. I enjoyed the public speaking and have since put myself forward in classes to lead readings. That year, the success of our events led us to be nominated for the Student Union’s “Society of the Year” Award for 2020.

I dedicated 6 hours every week to create posters, infographics, update our social media pages and spread promotional materials around campus. Following these initiatives, at our termly blackout event, we secured over 200 attendees, double the attendees from the previous year. The scale of the events requires you to be organised, meticulous and solutions based. As an executive member, it is essential to have solutions prepared for potential technical difficulties and operational faults. Furthermore, working in an executive team of 10 emphasises the importance of communication and collaboration. It was also key to be confident and well informed as each executive member is required to lead climate change awareness sessions on campus.
In October 2017, I was elected as social secretary of [redacted Russell Group university society]. It is a society which encourages those from low socio-economic backgrounds to consider higher education. I worked in an executive committee of eight, led presentations about higher education in local schools and structured the society’s social calendar. I have consistently sought out exposure to the legal field. As I was keen to gain insight into the legal industry at an undergraduate level, I liaised with my department to be able to study the “Origins of English Law”. In this module, I achieved 78% and I was commended by my professor for my “excellent performance”, especially as the only interdisciplinary student in my class. Moreover, in an elected interdisciplinary module on Genetics, I researched a CRISPR Cas-9 patent battle. Following my interest in the area, I reached out to an in-house lawyer from GlaxoSmithKline. I initiated a meeting to discuss his role as a lawyer and the changing world of biotechnologies. From then I knew I wanted to work in an environment which had innovation at its core. In 2019, I attended the Legal Innovator’s conference to learn more about legal technology and its implications on the industry. Moreover, after listening to a podcast entitled “Rebranding English Law”, I reached out to the two lawyers leading the discussion. Subsequently, I have initiated a meeting with a former senior partner at Allen and Overy who has agreed to help me understand the topic in greater detail. Due to some miscommunication, I was informed about the campaign only a week before the deadline, while brand ambassadors at other universities were already aware and were working on promotions. This was particularly challenging as I had to meet such high targets within such a short timeframe.
I planned an event on campus to promote the campaign. I arranged for banners and a set-up outside the library to get students’ attention. I offered free Clyde & Co merchandise and chocolates to students for signing up for the competition. I conducted a social media campaign where I held live sessions on Instagram to highlight the opportunities. I put up interactive Instagram stories with Q&As and polls to get students engaged with the campaign. I managed my time efficiently and improved my organisation, communication and creative thinking skills to effectively respond to the challenge.
I was successful in my efforts as I connected over 450 students to the campaign and got 150 students to sign up for the competition which was above my target. I was commended by the firm for my efforts and I received a discretionary bonus.
Tell us about responsibilities you have taken on outside of work and/or study.
I volunteer as a student legal advisor at the Queen Mary Legal Advice Centre. I predominantly work on criminal cases. I interview clients and provide them with a detailed advice letter highlighting their legal rights. I worked on a ‘revenge porn’ case recently. My client requested to learn about her rights as a victim of harassment as her private images were shared by the perpetrator online. My personal achievement was being able to provide the client with adept legal expertise and adequate resources to tackle the issue. I was motivated to help her as I believe that perpetrators of such offences should be held liable for their actions. I worked collaboratively with an associate lawyer to draft the letter and I took her constructive feedback well in producing a coherent letter.
I volunteer as a residential assistant (RA) for the Queen Mary Residential Services. I have several responsibilities like organising rooms, making deliveries and helping students move into their flats. A notable achievement has been receiving the ‘Best RA’ title for 2 months since I started. As an international student, I moved out of my home for the first time last year and I resonated with the anxieties that students face when entering a new environment. I was motivated to make the move-in experience better for students. I took extra efforts by working collaboratively with my team members to organise events like movie nights and ‘pizza + bingo’ for residents, which were appreciated by my team.

Having grown up in the coastal areas of Mumbai, close to shipping ports, I have gained first-hand practical knowledge of this field and I’ve developed my understanding of wet shipping and dry shipping through independent research. The firm’s advice on Knutsen Group’s financing of US $970 million of liquified natural gas carriers was quite interesting due to the complex transactional nature of the deal. I’m interested in engaging in such high-quality matters and the opportunity to train at Stephenson Harwood will provide me with ample amount of exposure in this field early on.
Stephenson Harwood is one of the few global firms that has an active presence in India. It was recognised as the leading international law firm for work in India by the India Business Law Journal. Having gained work experience at a start-up in India, I’ve developed my knowledge of how businesses operate in the country. Tell us about a time you have exceeded expectations in your work and/or study.
An example of when I exceeded expectations happened in August 2021 during my paralegal role. My supervisor had a family emergency, causing him to take unexpected annual leave. Despite my inexperience, I took responsibility during my supervisor's absence to take the pressure off other solicitors in my team. I liaised with clients and the other party's solicitors to keep all ongoing matters progressing smoothly.
The most significant challenge for me was managing the expectations of several major clients and keeping them happy with our matters' progress. Another challenge was to develop the confidence to liaise with other solicitors on matters and answer any queries they had.
I responded to these challenges by thoroughly preparing for scheduled calls with clients and solicitors and pre-empting any questions they would ask me. When liaising with clients, I also managed expectations by maintaining a calm and professional tone during my communication. I also asked other solicitors and trainees in my team for advice if I was unsure how to proceed. When speaking with solicitors, I responded to the challenge by noting how other solicitors in my office interacted with other party's solicitors to build my confidence.
The outcome of this experience was that I kept all ongoing transactions progressing smoothly without any problems developing. I was also able to exchange and complete two matters after liaising with the clients and ensuring they were satisfied. This experience was also important to me as it improved my confidence in my skills and ability.
Tell us about responsibilities you have taken on outside of work and/or study.
I was the Vice-President of the Global Brigades Society at university. I was motivated to pursue this responsibility by my passion for human rights. This pro bono initiative requires members to fundraise £1,500 to travel and conduct legal clinics in Central America. I coordinated the entire society's efforts to ensure that each member reached their fundraising goals by creating a spreadsheet and asking members for weekly updates. I also proactively liaised with local businesses to secure fundraising opportunities and gain revenue for the society. Every student I assisted successfully raised the required funds to participate in the project.
During my LLM, I was an Associate Editor of the Exeter Law Review. I reviewed complex academic legal articles by proofreading them for spelling and grammatical errors. I also utilised my analytical skills to consider the appeal of each piece for our readership. If I rejected an article, I would also work with the author by providing feedback to improve their work and feature in future editions.
I also was Junior Tennis Captain of the Wembley & Sudbury Lawn Tennis Club from 2009-2013. I led the team to win two in doubles and one in singles. My motivation was my passion for this sport, having played from an early age. I proactively led by creating a team training schedule with the assistance of our coach. I actively engaged with my team members and tailored the training programme to focus on each team member's strengths to boost our chances of success.

I seek to qualify at a firm that will give me exposure to high-quality shipping work while allowing me to experience other practice areas to decide which seat I would like to qualify into. I believe that Stephenson Harwood will provide this work, and it is a major driver behind my decision to apply to the firm.
I also think that the firm's environment (as reported in Chambers Student) offers me a more close-knit and inclusive training experience than other firms. From my previous work experience at law firms such as Penningtons and Ashurst with similar environments, I know that working in an environment like this is essential to me. Between Summer 2019 and Early 2020, I backpacked in Asia, New Zealand, and Australia. In Thailand, I spent six weeks developing my skills in this martial art by living and training in a boxing camp. I then travelled through New Zealand for one month using a hop-on/hop-off bus pass, meeting other travellers with whom I have maintained close friendships. Finally, I spent 4 months travelling Australia before deciding to come back to the UK when the pandemic initially broke out.

I’d consider my greatest achievement to be when I led my university's Jessup team. This prestigious annual competition was well-known for being difficult. To stay ahead and lead my team effectively, I researched all the regulations and requirements.
None of us has previously had any experiences with this competition before being selected for it. Despite this barrier, the most significant obstacle that I found was that none of my teammates knew each other and this added further complexity to the competition; team working is arguably the essential pre-requisite skill that is required to excel in this competition.
To solve this problem of animosity and to break the ice between my teammates, I created bi-monthly Jessup socials which aimed at fostering friendship among my team. I set up a series of mini-golf and movie events that required all members to participate. By doing this, I found that my team found it easier to discuss the Jessup workload among themselves. They started to delegate work between themselves and even take up the initiative to check on each other's personal and work commitments to ensure that everyone was up to the task.
During the competition's oral rounds, two judges acknowledged and commended on my team's strong camaraderie and teamwork. Through this competition, I further harnessed my creative thinking skills (which is essential for a trainee lawyer) that allowed me to successfully establish effective communication among team members which led to an overall increase in teamwork. My team did exceptionally, and we progressed successfully.

As an avid football player, I founded and trained the [redacted] Football neighbourhood team. During my university summer vacation, I returned to [redacted country] to train the all-girls teams. My job as founder and trainer is actively working with people to plan training schedules and decide on practice locations before all tournaments. By collaborating and actively listening to my team, I developed a more robust skill set in organisation and team working.
While at university, I developed a key interest in commercial law. To keep up with trends, I created an online commercial law blog known as [redacted] , where I discussed both broader commercial issues and market trends that stem from them. My blog has seen over 6,000 views. I aim to have it up to 20,000 by the end of 2020. This blog has allowed me to harness better drafting skills, as well as, developing a good eye for detail as I have to check my articles a few times to ensure there are no grammatical errors before uploading it to my blog.
Additionally, I have consistently been volunteering for ‘7 cups’ which is a site dedicated to helping at-risk suicidal individuals who I am passionate about helping. My role is to actively listen, ask questions, and advise individuals on how to tackle these problems. I have received a few awards such as the Active Listener award, Loyal Friend award and the Open-Door award. Through this experience, I have learned how to listen actively and influence them positively.

There are three skills that make a good commercial lawyer. They are:
1. Analytical ability. A lawyer must be able to identify key issues and apply sound commercial judgment to every problem. As an 'idea person', I have been known for coming up with creative and solution-driven ideas which will benefit Stephenson Harwood. For example, at '[redacted law firm]', I worked on a deal concerning a large pharmaceutical company. The company was about to go insolvent because of its severe cash-flow problems which rendered it unable to pay existing debt. The company, therefore, needed to restructure its debts. My mentor took my suggestion of using a mezzanine finance scheme and proposed it to the client.
2. Flexibility. A good commercial lawyer is one that can adapt to new challenges and are flexible in problem-solving. When I was 19, I started my own company. Having had no initial capital, I had to come up with creative ways to raise the fund. I collaborated with a [redacted nationality] artist to create poetic pieces which sold for profit. Through this, I raised S$2000, which I injected into my company's expense account. The problem-solving skills that I've learned through this will benefit the firm positively.

The case of Mitsui [2017], piqued my interest in shipping law as it showed how complicated and challenging shipping law could be. This case took eight years before receiving a ruling. Additionally, the quirkiness of the field adds additional excitement as cases may involve actual pirates such as the aforementioned case. I want to qualify in shipping law, and Stephenson Harwood provides such an opportunity.
2. The firm’s friendly and ‘tight-knit’ culture. According to Legal Cheek, the firm has been ranked ‘A’ for both peer support and partner approachability, this statistic coupled with the firm’s small trainee intake suggests a supportive and inclusive culture at the firm. As the vice-captain of my university’s football team, I have developed essential communicative skills that will allow me to add and create better group support. Therefore, not only would I thrive at the firm, but I would also add value.
3. The firm’s training. Between the sophisticated work that the firm does and the small trainee intake, I would be expected to take on a significant amount of responsibility which would allow me to learn more. As the owner of a legal blog, manager for The Business Update (TBU), speaker for TBU and bi-monthly webinar host, I have learned effective work management skills that would allow me to thrive at Stephenson Harwood.

What makes a good commercial lawyer?
A successful commercial lawyer must be bright, enjoy intellectual challenge, driven and determined, a team player, commercially aware and inquisitive. I enjoy keeping up to date with business news and issues facing legal clients in the business industry. I listen to podcasts such as Business Daily, FT News Briefing and The Economist. However, my interest in the law/ business extends beyond listening to the news: I am a member of business programmes such as [programme names]. These programmes have encouraged me to think independently and work in diverse teams (students of different races, ages, gender- similar to that of a law firm culture). An interest in current affairs are vital, as commercial lawyers must be aware of the issues facing client markets- to do this, lawyers have to understand client industries.
My part time role as a legal secretary involves communicating with clients, preparing court bundles and legal research- all of which mirror trainees tasks. My experience with reviewing contracts and agreements demonstrates that I am detail orientated and focused, and would be a successful trainee solicitor.
As commercial law is a client facing industry, lawyers deal with large, demanding clients. I demonstrated this skill during my internship with [name], where I confidently, confidentially and maturely communicated with clients at meetings. The positive engagement I experienced with both trainees and graduate recruitment on the day confirmed for me that I would love to work in your environment.
