I was drawn to Covington after learning about the firm’s $5 billion arbitration award for Naftogaz against Russia following the seizure of assets in Crimea. Attending “Powering the Future: Legal Perspective in the Evolving Energy Sector” further impressed me with Covington’s expertise in energy law, particularly in power projects and energy disputes. Studying political science and international studies at university, I learned the crucial relationship between energy and the global economy, attracting me to a career at the intersection. Commercial law offers the chance to engage with these dynamics, making Covington highly appealing as a firm operating at the top of the legal market across multiple jurisdictions. Covington’s work advising ACWA Power on financing the $920 million Hassyan IWP desalination plant in Dubai demonstrates this, also highlighting its involvement in high-value, energy transition projects.
Speaking to trainee Bryher Rose at AllAboutLaw’s “Get to Know Covington” event, I gained insight into the firm’s supportive culture. She described an open-door policy fostering reciprocal learning between senior and junior lawyers, alongside a lean trainee intake offering greater responsibility and working closely with associates and partners from the outset.
Growing up in a low-income household with a single mother, I took on responsibilities earlier than most, shaping in me resilience and a strong work ethic. Thus, Covington’s environment particularly appeals to me as I thrive on responsibility. From age 15, I balanced part-time work, extracurriculars, and academics nevertheless achieving a strong academic record. At university, these skills helped me balance responsibilities such as founding my university’s ski club and completing an undergraduate thesis, while working in sales 25 hours a week, still graduating in the top 5% of my class. Therefore, I am excited by the prospect of joining Covington, confident my work ethic will enable me to contribute to the firm’s success.

The regulatory landscape for technology in 2025 is slated to substantially increase, seen with burgeoning legislation such as the Cybersecurity and Resilience Bill in the UK (the Cybersecurity Bill). From data protection to AI, increased regulation requires companies to utilise law firms to guide them. Covington’s celebrated regulatory technology practice will thus be positively impacted, seeing an uptick in work with the potential to bring in lucrative clients globally, thanks to the firm’s seamlessly integrated network of global offices and affiliates.
The Cybersecurity Bill aims to intensify regulators' powers in digital services and supply chains, in addition to entrenching incident reporting. Therefore, the need for services related to compliance, contract review, and incident response will become essential, putting Covington in pole position to profit. Covington’s expertise in compliance and breach response will prove vital, helping clients navigate enhanced cybersecurity measures and contract renegotiations for cyber risks in supply chains, for example. Whether it be UK, EU, or US legislation, clients will turn to Covington for any technology regulatory concern related to cybersecurity and data privacy, heightened by the firm’s governmental connections and public policy prowess, demonstrated by the firm’s Chambers Band 1 ranking in Public Affairs.

In the US, the incoming Trump administration is poised to deregulate the technology space. Cross-border clients will need assistance with policy rollback, especially in AI and media, nevertheless propelling the need for Covington’s technology regulatory expertise.
If you could invent a new product or technology that does not currently exist, what would it be and why? (250 words)
As someone with a family history of Alzheimer’s disease, the development of a cure has long been at the front of my mind. Thus, if I could invent a new product, it would be a drug that destroys the buildup of amyloid and tau proteins in the brain, completely reducing the likelihood of dementia.
Having worked as an in-home healthcare provider for an elderly woman with Alzheimer’s, I have witnessed first-hand the detriment of the disease. Alzheimer’s causes rapid cognitive decline via dementia, destroying brain function in a matter of a few years. It has an effect not only on the patient but so too their family and friends.
Alzheimer’s also has a significant economic burden on the world, projected to affect nearly 140 million people by 2050. According to Alzheimer’s Research UK, 1.1 billion hours are spent on unpaid care for people with Alzheimer’s yearly, costing the country £42 billion. Relieving this burden with a cure would provide an immense economic and productive input into the UK. So too would it stimulate the global economy, freeing the estimated $1 trillion that is spent yearly. As the disease disproportionately affects developing countries, a cure would also fuel emerging market growth, in turn having a positive effect on advanced economies.
A cure would push resources to be devoted to research for other diseases and keep elderly people who want to work in their respective economies. And, most importantly, it would give families crucial time together that they would have otherwise lost.
Describe an experience, or activity which you have been involved in outside of your academic studies, how has this experience allowed you to develop? (You can use examples from any area of your life including extra-curricular activities, paid or voluntary work} 300
Hospitality has been pivotal in developing my communication, teamwork, adaptability, and resilience under pressure. A key role in this growth was working as a front desk agent at a large-scale luxury resort and convention centre.
Spanning 1.9 million square feet with 1,500 rooms, the resort often handled check-ins and check-outs for 1,300 guests. Managing these volumes required exceptional teamwork and communication. Despite being new to the job, I was regularly tasked by managers to assist newer colleagues with the CRM software, having learned it quicker than most. While understanding boundaries, I frequently assessed my colleague’s morale, checking to see if they needed assistance with the software or otherwise.
Peak check-in days demanded processing guests quickly while ensuring they felt welcomed and unhurried, clearly explaining the resort’s facilities to enhance their stay. Balancing efficiency with personal connection was crucial. High-stress scenarios frequently arose, such as long queues of guests growing impatient. Maintaining team determination and an energetic atmosphere in these moments was essential. I problem-solved by stepping away from desk duties to assist guests with refreshments or luggage, proactively seeking to ease guest frustration and provide colleagues a brief respite.
The role was instrumental in shaping my interpersonal skills, as hospitality demands an ability to read body language and adapt accordingly, particularly when guests want immediate solutions to their grievances. This heightened my resilience under pressure, requiring me to multitask by performing a cost-benefit-analysis, empathising with the guest’s situation, and providing a solution in seconds. While offering upgraded accommodations and absolving portions of the guest’s bill was a quick resolution, this cut into hotel returns, and often situations could be simply resolved with more cost-effective options, such as offering discounts to resort amenities. I developed the ability to assist guest in a moment’s notice, turning potentially negative experiences into positive outcomes.

Why would you like to pursue a career as a solicitor at Covington? (300 words)
I am applying to Covington because of my interest in the Band 1 Life Sciences Transactional and Regulatory teams. My passion for this sector stems from my role with [REDACTED] Life Sciences team, where I manage a portfolio of seven start-up pharmaceutical companies from inception to strategic decision-making. I find this sector fascinating due to its rapid evolution, from digitalisation to new regulations, and its position at the forefront of biological and human development. Covington will allow me to expand my knowledge by contributing to the Talking Life Sciences Audiocast and engaging in groundbreaking M&A developments in the sector, such as Ergomed’s acquisition by Permira.
I value Covington’s government and regulatory affairs expertise. My legal Internship with the Conservative Party required me to become an expert in various sectors to advise constituents, businesses, and governmental bodies. I found this energising because I value the impact of governmental policy on stakeholders’ decisions. That is why I was inspired by James Halstead at Covington’s Insight Series, emphasising the importance of lawyers in policy expertise. The global AI market in the life sciences sector is expected to grow at a compound annual rate of 41.2%. Key players such as Indegene are advocating for the use of generative AI in safety and pharmacovigilance to identify and extract information for safety reports, which are then sent to regulators. Regulators and the UK Parliament warn that AI needs to be closely scrutinised in a sector that concerns human health. Covington must closely monitor the life sciences sector to identify any new regulation proposals that may impact their clients' strategic goals or change existing law.
Covington’s Life Sciences team must be aware of the impact of AI development on trademark infringement. Trademarks are invaluable in the life sciences sector as their products directly relate to public health and consumer purchasing decisions. Rebecca Dalton at Covington warns that third parties using AI-generated output risk committing trademark infringement. Lisa Peets highlights that patient privacy is also at risk with the development of AI. Companies are carefully navigating patient data, after the lawsuit against Google's AI DeepMind in 2015, which tapped into 1.6 million patients' data to create life-saving apps. Covington must ensure clients protect patient data, comply with GDPR, and avoid trademark infringement as AI develops.
In a heavily regulated sector such as life sciences, Covington should continue to use its EMEA Tech Regulation Toolkit to demonstrate its expertise in the regulatory environment. Covington should promote its Talking Life Sciences Audiocast, updating clients on the regulatory reforms in the sector and evolving scope of cell and gene therapy. By utilising both, Covington showcases its awareness in the sector, appealing to prospective clients seeking guidance in the evolving regulatory environment.
Name a historical figure that you admire and outline why. (300 words)
I greatly admire Stephen Hawking for his teachings to colleagues, students and humanity, as well as his exceptional career breakthroughs that demonstrate his passion and lifelong dedication to his field. Despite facing adversity, including a motor neuron disease and scientists rejecting his then-controversial theories, Hawking persevered and continued to overcome barriers to become the best scientist he could.
Hawking taught many valuable life lessons, such as the importance of making mistakes. He argued that “without imperfection, neither you nor I would exist”, emphasising the value of learning from one’s errors. He also stressed the significance of being inquisitive, persistent, and never underestimating oneself. Growing up in a financially disadvantaged family, I found inspiration in Hawking’s words. They encouraged me to fight for my career in law. His words inspired me to be the first in my family to go to university and to take every opportunity life provides. His encouragement to ask questions, learn from mistakes, and be persistent is key to my development as a legal professional.
Hawking’s work taught me the importance of work ethic. When he first presented the Hawking Radiation theory in 1974, scientists dismissed the theory for being too controversial. He persisted and spent three years convincing others to accept his theory. Today, it is regarded as a significant development in physics. Hawking taught me that you should be confident in your beliefs and be prepared to advocate for them. His belief in challenging the ordinary understanding fuels my ambition to continuously seek new and innovative solutions to issues. Hawking’s actions have inspired me when seeking new opportunities. For example, when preparing to present the idea of introducing Kira to [REDACTED], it was Hawking’s words that reminded me the value in preparing to market the idea and persuading stakeholders on its value.

I am deeply passionate about social mobility, which is the ability of individuals to advance their socioeconomic status regardless of their circumstances. This issue holds immense personal importance to me due to my upbringing in a financially disadvantaged family with a single unemployed parent. This experience has given me firsthand insight into the challenges students face when striving for higher education and job opportunities in competitive industries.
In the UK, the lack of social mobility is having significant, detrimental effects on students. The Social Mobility Commission found that affluent students have twice the chance of achieving higher-paying jobs compared to their working-class peers. This inequality in educational and employment opportunities perpetuates cycles of poverty and limits the potential contributions of talented individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds.
To address this issue, I volunteer at food banks, participate in school workshops, and mentor students applying to universities or for apprenticeships. Through this, I help students develop their strengths to overcome barriers stemming from limited financial resources. For example, I assist them in finding volunteering opportunities to build transferable skills, offer them the chance to shadow me for a day, or provide advice to strengthen their applications.
My commitment extends to pro-bono work with charities like [REDACTED], which provides legal representation to death row inmates unable to afford their own attorneys. Why would you like to pursue a career as a solicitor at Covington & Burling LLP? 500 words
I am interested in pursuing a career as a solicitor at Covington & Burling LLP (Covington) due to its unparalleled expertise in the life sciences sector. With a Chambers Band 1 ranking, the firm advises on industry-leading deals. I was intrigued by the firm’s advice to Insmed in a $775 million financing deal which included a secured term-loan facility agreement and a royalty financing agreement. I was fascinated to learn that Insmed intends to use the proceeds to commercialise ‘ARIKAYCE’, a prescription drug used for lung diseases. My interest in this practice area stems from shadowing the general counsel at Glenmark Pharmaceuticals, one of India’s largest pharmaceutical companies. Understanding legal concerns first-hand from a client perspective exposed me to the work in this field. My interest in working for such clients motivates me to pursue a career at Covington.
Covington’s training programme structure with core seats in corporate and dispute resolution appeals to me. Firstly, winning the Hogan Lovells commercial negotiation sparked my interest in dispute resolution. In the finals, I represented a company that dealt with supply chain constraints caused by the Russia-Ukraine war. I was intrigued to learn about Covington’s representation on behalf of the Ukrainian Government against Russia in the International Court of Justice. I used these commercial insights and creative problem-solving skills to negotiate a deal for my client, which led me to win the competition. Secondly, Covington’s leading corporate team that has worked on over 500 M&A deals valued at $500+ billion fascinates me. My interest in corporate stems from completing a work placement with Fieldfisher, where I reviewed a suite of corporate authorisations and a secured term loan agreement for an M&A deal. This gave me insights into work in the corporate sector. My interest in working in litigation and corporate during my training contract motivates me to apply to Covington.
Covington’s collaborative work culture also interests me. Speaking to trainee Alex Carn at the Covington Insight Day in April 2022, I learnt that trainees are encouraged to take on high levels of responsibility. As a residential assistant at Queen Mary, I work in a team of 4 to organise events for over 2000 students on campus. Through this, I have learnt to take responsibility and ownership of my work. I’ve realised that I’m better suited to thrive in small teams where I can learn through direct experiences rather than strict formal training, similar to the culture that Covington nurtures. My interest in working in such an environment motivates me to apply to the firm.
Lastly, Covington’s commitment to diversity and inclusion also inspires me. The firm’s London office has 61% female representation in both legal and non-legal departments. It was recognised as the Best Law Firm for Women by Seramount this year. As a woman of colour belonging to an ethnic minority, I worked for Girl Up, a club that promotes gender equality in the corporate world. A recent news article, "Artificial Intelligence (AI): Continuing to revolutionise the life sciences value chain" by 'TechUK' caught my attention. I was intrigued to learn about AI's impact in each stage of the life sciences product lifecycle, from R&D and clinical trials to manufacturing and supply chain. The AI healthcare market is expected to grow from US $11 billion in 2021 to US $188 billion in 2030. This is transforming the life sciences industry in ways never imagined before. For instance, AI is now being used to discover and validate new drugs. UK scientists are using an AI-powered drug discovery platforms to identify cancer treatment drugs. Similarly, AI tools are being used to develop models that can test the quality, efficacy, and safety of new drugs faster. Large amounts of trial data are collated, consolidated, and analysed quickly using AI.
This has several implications on Covington's business as it deals with companies like AstraZeneca, McKesson, Eli Lilly and Company daily. As the life sciences industry is one of the most regulated sectors, Covington's regulatory practice can ensure that client's AI-generated product meets the evolving safety regulation and compliance standards. Any potential litigation arising from the same can be dealt by the firm's leading dispute resolution and investigations team. Given the enormous influx of big data, Covington's data privacy and cyber security practice could capitalise the opportunity and advice clients with any data-related concerns. To exploit the prospects arising out of AI, healthcare companies will merge or acquire tech-based ventures. Covington's core corporate M&A practice can take advantage of this to expand its business. Lastly, Covington’s specialist AI team has advised Sensyne Health, a British company on an AI-based venture. This suggests that Covington is well placed to help clients deal with any AI-related legal concerns.
If you could bring into force any law, what would that law be and why?
If I could bring into force any law, I would create a regulatory framework to scrutinise ESG rating agencies and bring them under the Financial Conduct Authority’s (FCA) reach.
ESG factors are gaining greater prominence in driving business strategy and sustainability-linked investments. According to a PwC report, 79% of investors consider ESG factors before investing. ESG ratings and the rating providers are critical in facilitating sustainability-linked investments. However, critics have argued that the metrics used by these rating agencies are ambiguous and unstandardised. This has led to increased scrutiny of ESG rating agencies. Additionally, inaccurate ratings could potentially impact an organisation’s creditworthiness. Given the lack of regulation in the sphere, it is unclear how these rating agencies could be held accountable for their actions. Thus, regulation in this sphere is a pertinent concern that needs to be addressed.
In my opinion, since credit rating agencies are subjected to a comprehensive regulatory framework, ESG rating agencies should also be brought under regulatory scrutiny. Chancellor Jeremy Hunt outlined the possibility of considering the same among the 30 reforms to financial services regulation. A consultation paper also suggested how the FCA and the Treasury can create a standardised system for ESG rating providers.
Moreover, a centralised registration system will enable authorities to keep track of all entities issuing ESG ratings. This will bind them to a common organisational and industry standard to mitigate conflict of interest, focus on transparency, good governance and robust control systems. It will ensure reliable measurement and methodology for rating, consistent disclosure of ESG data, and tight scrutiny of ESG data disclosures. The FCA can ensure a globally coherent approach to regulation in line with recommendations from global authorities like European Securities and Markets Authority. This will be crucial in developing market confidence and safeguarding investors’ interests.

I have inculcated resilience, adaptability and commitment through varied experiences, which makes me stand out from other applicants.
I regularly engage in volunteer work. Last summer, while surveying a local orphanage in Mumbai, I came across the poor living conditions of young orphaned children due to a shortage of sanitary supplies. I initiated a donation drive to tackle this issue by setting up collection stalls at 3 locations. As a result, I provided 100 young children with yearlong sanitary supplies. I liaised with local NGOs and convinced them to conduct such drives regularly. Through my actions, I uplifted the living conditions of underprivileged children.
Subsequently, I’ve been volunteering at the Queen Mary Legal Advice Centre. I interview clients to draft succinct advice letters outlining the client’s legal rights. Recently, I worked on a ‘revenge porn’ case. I helped my client learn about her rights as a victim of harassment, as her private images were shared online by the perpetrator. I collaborated with a practising solicitor to draft the letter and worked under pressure to ensure that my client received the advice letter within the 7-day deadline. These experiences deeply impacted me. I was committed to delivering to the best of my capabilities to make an impact. It taught me to be resilient and take complete responsibility of my work.
Another interest of mine is dance. I started dancing when I was 9 years old. For several years I trained in Kathak, an Indian classical dance form. I went on to do stage performances in western and several Indian classical dance forms. This taught me how to be adaptable. I continued to pursue this passion at university as an active member of the Bollywood dance society. Despite several setbacks, like injuries, I remained resilient and improved with practice over the years.

Dear Graduate Recruitment,
I am writing to apply for the summer vacation scheme role at Covington & Burling. I am a penultimate year law student at [redacted] University who is interested in gaining experience at a distinctively global firm with a strong ethos and culture.
My initial interest in law and desire to work in a law firm was due to the intellectual curiosity and academic rigour which the work demands. Although much of the law is rigid in structure and has guided judicial decisions for decades, the element of flexibility and interpretation which shapes and develops law ensures greater consistency with the needs of citizens. As the economy constantly fluctuates in response to varying consumer trends, the way the law therefore has to accelerate and react to stay relevant in the legal market is exciting.
I would like to pursue a career in commercial law as I am fascinated by the fast-paced and dynamic environment. I am drawn into the client-facing aspect and opportunity to work with businesses from an extensive spectrum of sectors, allowing me to broaden my experiences through interacting with a range of clients. I am particularly interested in building client relationships in order to most efficiently work with businesses, actually understanding how they operate: their motivation, drive and their business strategy in the developing world. It is crucial that lawyers need not only to be able to react to change but more importantly, anticipate risks associated with those changes. Being able to analyse more than just the bottom line of a development is vital to ensure firms continue to use innovative tools to support a strategy which brings long-term profit.
Hearing about Covington's quality of work at Bright Networks Future Top 100 Lawyers event and its particular expertise in its regulatory practice encouraged me to apply. In pharmaceuticals, I enjoyed reading about Covington's dispute resolution cases representing Hoffmann La-Roche, where the firm successfully convinced the Court to dismiss 2,100 cases. The fact Covington was able to overturn the Court’s previous verdicts on the mass Accutane tort claims cements its position as a word-leading practice.
The firm’s work with legislators through lobbying is a competitive advantage. It is exciting that the firm have ex-politician senior advisers with extensive knowledge on policy matters. This allows the firm to provide quality client service considering all risks. Covington successfully selects their locations to work in; ensuring they are relevant in all practices. I believe the firm has a distinct expansion strategy which works well; they understand how to react to emerging markets through their regional initiatives yet value having a depth of practice. For example, the firm’s growing presence in China represents the firms forward-thinking outlook and evaluating which regions will provide more opportunities and challenges to clients.
Finally, I am attracted to the small trainee intake. Whilst I am not afraid to take initiative and thrive working in team environments, I believe the small size will give me more opportunity to gain more responsibility and specialised training.
Please give an example of how you have made a positive contribution to a team.
Throughout secondary school, I was actively aware of the effect music had on my personal development. I felt lucky leading my school orchestra and playing in various nationally acclaimed ensembles. Yet, I became increasingly conscious of the lack of music access in my area. Understanding the true benefits of music-making, I pitched an idea to school governors to teach workshops to primary schools which was well received, especially as it was a programme completely unheard of. Whilst preparing, I considered how children approach learning and which techniques would pique interest, making sessions more productive. After the first workshop, my team and I analysed feedback to improve. Whilst everyone thought the programme was fine and did not need any changes, I realised that we could enhance the children's experience if we prepared alternative exercises and had the option of a backup programme. To provide this, I tested the new methods with small market-research groups to assess the effectiveness of the new approach and evaluate any further room for improvement. Just before the second workshop, a member disclosed her discomfort in presenting. Although this was stressful under pressure, it was important to me that everyone was comfortable. Therefore, I reallocated and delegated new roles whilst making sure there remained an element of flexibility so that people could seamlessly transition into others parts if needed. Following the success of the testing and the subsequent second workshop, we were able to confidently present the innovated workshop to schools throughout the year.
If you could experience first-hand one historical event, what would it be and why?
I would experience Martin Luther King Jrs’ “I Have a Dream” speech at the March on Washington in 1963. With crowds of over 250,000 people, I imagine being a part of the bustling atmosphere would be incredibly exciting, especially among the supporters of the movement. This event inspires me for showing how important it is to make a stand for something you truly believe in. I strongly admire Martin Luther King’s efforts to criminalise discrimination and promote non-segregation and equality. In today’s society, there still remains some ignorance to diversity and inclusion. It is inspiring that Covington actively promotes, supports and nurtures young diverse talent. I enjoyed reading how the firm’s recently promoted partners were the most diverse class, including women from ethnically diverse backgrounds, whilst the firm actively develops and adopts the Mansfield Rule. A particular line in the speech that strongly resonates with me is “I have a dream...will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character”. This line reinforces the idea that society works best when there is a breadth of opinions, which is akin to clients’ requirements of law firms. Aside from the cultural and social impact, this speech is significant as it drove huge economic and political change through the 1964 Civil Rights Act and 1965 Voting Rights Act. I want to experience the speech which gave coloured people more opportunity and more power to live their lives.

At University, I receive a Vice Chancellor's Scholarship, in recognition of my musical achievements. I am the elected Publicity Officer and Leader of my University Orchestra, which involves publicising concerts and assessing strategies to attract audiences through analysing and adapting to consumer trends. I thoroughly enjoy the teamwork in making music; committing and leading weekly rehearsals has enabled me to truly value hard work.
I volunteer by tutoring English which is rewarding as I help students achieve their goals through offering solutions to their problems. Moreover, teaching violin has developed my professionalism, communication and flexibility with my teaching methods.
I embrace all opportunities through being the Head of Publicity of the Fashion Show to working on the [redacted] University Charities Committee, leading events to raise awareness on topics such as mental health and social inequality. As the Entertainment Senior of the Ball Committee, I am individually responsible for organising Entertainment for College Balls and deal with a budget of over £20,000 which hosts 500 guests. This role is demanding and requires intense commitment and adaptability.
At school, I received the [redacted] Memorial Prize, peer-nominated and awarded to the person who best served the school. I was the Vice Dance President and successfully organised a performance showcase involving 100 students. On top of Community Service work, I also founded a Law Society, where I hosted weekly meetings and discussions about relevant news topics. I enjoyed creating a platform to discuss legal developments whilst engaging younger students to do so in the process.
What achievement in the past 5 years are you most proud of and why?
One of my proudest achievements was where I organised a charity performance showcase in aid of Birmingham Children's Hospital, raising £2000. This was an extremely important event to me; I wanted to raise awareness and support the Hospital as they do for my community. I was motivated and passionate about the cause and incorporated my own hobbies into the event to express how we can all make a difference through activities we enjoy. I was initially reluctant to organise the event as I didnt believe it would gain much support. Similarly, I lacked confidence in public speaking and did not want to take myself out of my comfort zone.
However, I pushed myself to organise the event as I wanted to make a difference. At the beginning of the year, I set myself a plan to complete a certain task every week. This was crucial in ensuring I was not overwhelmed during planning. The tasks involved finding, quoting and booking venues, negotiating with sponsors and sourcing performers. I often found it difficult to quickly liaise with others and was chasing people up to get answers. I had to be approachable and adaptable to circumstances which were out of my control. The night before the event, one of my dancers dropped out. Although this was stressful, I quickly contacted alternative performers and managed to negotiate with them to secure a new act that same night. This experience taught me to always deal with situations calmly and have back-up solutions.
