1. Discuss a topic that you are passionate about. How did you become interested in it, and how has it influenced your personal or professional life? (300 words)

My passion for DJing began during my first year of university. I started experimenting with mixing tracks in my spare time to unwind from academic pressures. DJing began as a hobby but soon evolved into a passion as I became motivated by the challenge of crafting seamless transitions between songs and creating sets that could enhance crowd energy. In my second year, I began performing at nightclub events, balancing the thrill of live performances with the responsibility of managing equipment, playlists, and a dynamic audience.

DJing has taught me the value of adaptability and preparation. No two events are the same, therefore, reading the room and adjusting to the energy of the crowd is crucial to keeping an audience engaged. This ability to stay agile and responsive under pressure has significantly influenced how I approach teamwork and problem-solving in professional contexts. It has also strengthened my confidence, as performing live requires composure and quick thinking in front of large audiences.

Beyond the technical and interpersonal skills, DJing has shaped my perspective on creativity and connection. Music is a universal language that brings people together, and I have learned the importance of understanding different tastes and collaborating with others to deliver a shared experience. These lessons resonate with my career aspirations, where building relationships, fostering collaboration, and tailoring solutions are key.

The rise of streaming services has revolutionised Warner Bros’ business model but poses a significant challenge in protecting its intellectual property (IP) in the digital age. Digital piracy and unauthorised content sharing have become increasingly prevalent, undermining the value of Warner Bros’ streaming platforms and costing the company substantial revenue. Recent studies estimate the global streaming industry loses over $9 billion annually due to piracy, including early releases of films and TV shows. This jeopardises the company’s ability to recoup its investments in high-quality content and diminishes the value of its intellectual assets.

Advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) introduce further risks to IP protection. AI-generated content blurs the lines of copyright ownership, leaving Warner Bros vulnerable to disputes over who holds the rights to innovative, AI-assisted works. The absence of clear regulations governing AI further complicates these challenges, potentially leaving Warner Bros exposed to costly disputes and reputational harm.

Commercial awareness is essential for understanding clients' industries and delivering practical solutions. As a quarter-finalist in the Aspiring Solicitors Commercial Awareness Competition (top 15%), I analysed trends in AI regulation, ESG transparency, and renewable energy, identifying issues like inconsistent methodologies in ESG ratings and their impact on investor confidence. As 1 of 30 semi-finalists from over 800 in Watson’s Daily Competition, I assessed the US court’s ruling against Google, exploring implications for competitors and antitrust action. Drawing on insights from a CMA workshop, I proposed stricter regulatory oversight and its potential for setting global antitrust precedents. These experiences developed my ability to address legal issues in commercial contexts.

Commercial lawyers must also possess excellent time-management skills when navigating multiple client deadlines. As Operations Manager at Ink, I balanced part-time work alongside academic exams, volunteering for organisations like Support Through Court, and attending society events and extracurricular commitments. I used a detailed to-do list and scheduled time buffers to manage conflicting demands and unforeseen challenges. This ensured I upheld high-quality work across all areas. Despite a demanding schedule, I achieved top grades and developed the ability to prioritise under pressure, a critical skill for a legal career. 

Effective communication is essential for collaborating with clients and colleagues and delivering clear, actionable advice. While volunteering with NLS Legal, I explained changes to IPP legislation to a client, adapting my communication style to their understanding. I used executive summaries and bullet points to make complex legal concepts digestible. During Barclays Legal Experience Week, I worked with a team to deliver a fictional law firm pitch to a tech start-up. By fostering collaboration and concise communication, we received strong feedback from the judges. These experiences highlight my ability to adapt my communication style for different audiences, a vital skill in a global law firm.

A series of talks discussing the firm’s practice areas organised in conjunction with [university]. It was interesting to discuss with associates and partners how law firms’ corporate and finance teams are helping their clients navigate the impact of sanctions relating to Russia. 

It is the opportunity to help clients solve their problems and deliver a real, positive impact that makes a career in law so exciting. The workshop was a fantastic experience and as a non-law student reinforced my belief that I would enjoy being a solicitor. 

Ashurst: Digital Economy  

This webinar explored the unique and pivotal role that lawyers are playing in helping clients navigate the rapidly evolving digital economy landscape. It was fascinating to discover the impact of technological advancements on both businesses and law firms, such as the opportunities and challenges present by AI and keeping clients informed about the shifting regulatory landscape. 

White & Case: An Introduction to Capital Markets  

A presentation by James Greene that provided a comprehensive overview of financial markets and the work carried out in White & Case’s capital markets teams. I gained a deeper understanding behind the recent disruptions in global bond markets, including the strategic choices made by companies and investors in selecting the most suitable financial instruments to meet their specific needs.

Herbert Smith Freehills Open Day  

A case study workshop that focused on dispute resolution, followed by networking where I had the opportunity to talk to lawyers from across HSF’s practice areas. It was a great chance to understand life in a seat in dispute resolution as we were introduced to HSF’s representation of five non-executive directors in the on-going Carillion case. 

Tell us about something - anything - that excites and inspires you. (300 words) 

I am interested in the role that digital platforms play in facilitating the Non-Consensual sharing of Intimate Images (NCII). Commonly referred to as "revenge porn", NCII is the act of distributing intimate photos or videos without the depicted subject's consent. Numerous studies have revealed the harms caused, extent and motivations of bad actors, but analysis about online platforms facilitating offending is scant. Consequently, this was the focus of my research during my master’s degree. 

The case of reality star Georgia Harrison inspired my research. Her ex-boyfriend, Stephen Bear, shared an intimate video of her on an adult subscription platform. In March 2023, he was sentenced for voyeurism and two counts of ‘revenge porn.’ The case received extensive media coverage and coincided with broader debate concerning digital harms, especially in relation to women’s safety online, which was undergoing legislative and political scrutiny. Georgia’s subsequent campaigning is known for promoting he need for legal reform to remove the requirement to prove intent to cause distress for convictions, alongside establishing NCII as a base offense. 

NCII is just one example demonstrating the pressing need for industry to take greater responsibility for managing the inherent risk in their products and services. 2023 marked a turning point in developing a comprehensive legislative response to online harms with the long-awaited Online Safety Act receiving Royal Assent. This legislation has huge implications for industry. It demands technology companies to remove illegal content, assess the risk for their vulnerable users and respond proactively, backing this up with punitive measures. However, as the reach of online platforms and the pace of technological innovation increase, so do new forms of violence. Whilst exciting and significant progress has been made, it does not end here. 

Choose one of our clients and explain a challenge they are currently facing. What could the organisation do to overcome this challenge and how could we assist? (400 words)

The arduous task of meeting immediate energy needs while decarbonising at sufficient pace poses significant challenges for oil and gas companies. The British energy giant Shell is one of Baker McKenzie's clients facing escalating pressure from climate activists, shareholders, and governments regarding their strategy toward cleaner energy production.

Geopolitical unrest and a tough economic environment have forced energy companies, like Shell, to reassess their priorities. The full-scale invasion of Ukraine sparked a crisis that shifted attention from climate change to addressing immediate energy needs. Controversially, this resulted in record cash flows for energy giants, prompting some to place bets on the future reliance on oil and gas, such as the recent multi-billion-dollar acquisitions by ExxonMobil and Chevron. Alongside a resurgence in investor appetite for oil and gas production, supply chain disruptions, rising costs, and higher interest rates have led to numerous cancellations and delays in renewable energy projects, raising concerns about their profitability. 

Against this challenging backdrop, Shell finds itself in a conflicting position—whether to increase investments in fossil fuels (like its competitors) or continue to pursue low-carbon initiatives. To overcome this challenge, Shell must adopt a clear strategy that strikes a balance between reducing emissions and addressing near-time energy demands. The key lies in finding the right opportunities at the right time and collaborating with a wide range of stakeholders, including governments, project developers, and private capital providers. 

With its market-leading expertise in renewable energy transactions across a breadth of sectors, Baker McKenzie can support Shell to divest from unprofitable investments and venture into emerging high-growth renewable sectors, like carbon capture and storage. In Morocco, henna's scent is as common as the stories of our Amazigh heritage. Henna art, with its origins in the Amazigh tribes, is significant to me. It is a unique blend of beauty, symbolism, and practical use. Historically, in the scorching desert terrains of Morocco, henna provided a cooling effect. However, at its foundation, it is body art, created using the crushed leaves of the henna plant to form detailed patterns on the skin. These designs, whether geometric or floral, are more than just visuals. They carried deep cultural meanings, symbolizing protection from harm, and symbols of wisdom and fertility. In contemporary times, henna remains a significant element in important life milestones. For instance, in Moroccan weddings, it represents a new life phase for the bride. More than the art, it is the bond it fosters, bringing people closer on festive occasions.

My fascination with henna art is rooted in various facets. Firstly, its deep ties to Moroccan history provide insights into the stories and customs of my Amazigh ancestry. It provides a direct path to understanding the historical and cultural background of Morocco. Secondly, the art itself, characterized by its flexibility and adaptability, captivated me. From traditional motifs to modern interpretations, henna provides an unusual canvas to showcase creativity. My intrigue in the diverse designs led me to enrol in henna art classes, deepening my knowledge and skill in the craft. I learned the artistic application and became acutely aware of the symbolic significance each pattern held. As I delved deeper into the art, henna became more than a hobby; it became a medium for me to explore my creativity. This form of art, with its interesting blend of artistry and cultural connotation, serves as a constant reminder of my personal journey and identity. (296 words)

This venture, focusing on the development of utility-scale solar and battery projects, is strategically significant in the current landscape where infrastructure investment is increasingly being directed towards sustainable and renewable energy sources. However, this shift comes with its own set of challenges.

One of the primary challenges for OGEO is navigating the complex and ever-evolving regulatory landscape of Australia's renewable energy sector. This challenge is compounded by the need to balance investment risks amidst rapidly changing policies and market conditions. As Australia intensifies its efforts towards increasing renewable energy output, it becomes crucial for OGEO to stay updated with the latest regulatory requirements and adapt their strategies accordingly.

Describe three of your key strengths that will assist you in a career as a commercial lawyer and explain how you have developed them. (300 words) 

Three fundamental strengths that I possess are particularly relevant to my pursuit of a career in commercial law. As a Vantage Campus Ambassador, I refined my teamwork skills. A notable instance was the organization of a student fair, undertaken with fellow [redacted] ambassadors. We conducted regular team meetings, and managed venue selection and student engagement. Our teamwork culminated in the fair's success and impressive attendance. This is particularly relevant to the collaborative aspect of a trainee role. Working cohesively with various stakeholders is essential, especially in initiatives that span multiple jurisdictions and encompass diverse practice areas. Leveraging the collective strengths of a team fosters innovative and effective legal solutions.

At Bloomsbury Law, I was responsible for drafting, and cross-referencing lease contracts with the points raised by opposing counsel. My role demanded attention to detail. On one occasion, my meticulous review caught an inconsistency in a lease term that could have financially impacted our client. This experience reinforced how even minor oversights can have significant consequences. For a trainee, possessing sharp attention to detail is indispensable. Mistakes not only jeopardize client relationships but can also affect the outcome of matters. Moreover, precise communication and documentation reflect a firm's professionalism, ensuring clients receive accurate and high-quality solutions.

My administrative assistant role at the Marrakech Boxing Cup showcased my adaptability. Faced with unexpected speaker changes at a press conference, I quickly adapted our strategy and coordinated with the Board Committee and the Moroccan Federation to effectively address this challenge. This swift adaptation ensured the event proceeded as scheduled and positively impacted our intended audience. Adaptability is essential for a trainee, who must often navigate unexpected changes and challenges. The ability to quickly adapt to shifting circumstances or client needs is crucial to delivering legal services that successfully meet client expectations.

Tell us about something- anything- that excites and inspires you? (300 words max)

Theatre challenges the mind, for it makes one think and pushes us to use our imagination. During a play, we are projected into a world of fantasy and imagination, a world that only lasts for a certain time. A period in which one feels pain, joy, hatred, love, and countless other emotions. A theatrical experience can never be replicated. Despite scripts being the same, every performance is different thus, making every act unique. It is a cultural phenomenon which demands that society examines itself in the mirror.

When I was ten years old, I saw the play, Lion King and was fascinated. I wanted to act, so I went to a theatre camp that summer and found my passion for acting and theatre. Since I was ten, I have been a part of a play every year. I have done all kinds of roles from acting to narrating, directing, script writing, and stage managing. I even studied theatre in school for 5 years and have analysed two of Shakespeare’s plays. Some of my acting highlights have been playing the roles of Peter Pan, and Sir Wilfrid Robarts in Agatha Christie’s, Witness for the Prosecution. I played the lead role in a student written play last year at university, where we sold all 250 tickets for the show. Acting excites me. It has taught me empathy, by being in a character's shoes. It has taught me the importance of taking ownership of my work while collaborating with others. Theatre inspires me as it has been one of the most empowering factors of my life. It has helped me channel my desires, feelings, and emotions. It has given me a creative perspective of the world. Acting always leaves me with a conscience that stimulates my mind by bringing reality up against imagination.

These acquisitions showcase Baker Mckenzie’s ability to collaborate across jurisdictions seamlessly. The firm’s Band 1 ranking in employment, tax, TMT and IP by Chambers Global, shows that it can guide clients through all stages of their transactions. My interest in M&A and transactional work encouraged me to apply to the firm. My interest stems from completing an M&A workshop, and self-taught investing. Having worked at a bank this summer, I have further nourished my interests.

As an ethnic minority, representation is important to me and Baker McKenzie’s efforts towards the same encourages me to apply to the firm. 

Select 3 key skills that you believe are critical to the role of a commercial lawyer. How have you developed these skills? (300 words max)

As a commercial lawyer, being an enthusiastic team-player is imperative. Since the work is high pressure and fast paced, being collaborative and high spirited can be effective and beneficial. I worked as a team member at Shake Shack, a fast-food joint during my winter break. Despite being short staffed during the notorious pressure of the Christmas period, I remained enthusiastic and maintained my approachable manner to work efficiently. I proactively took more responsibility to ensure that my colleagues were able to rely on me for support, while customers received the best possible service. My colleagues were from diverse cultures and backgrounds, collaborating effectively with them made me realise that I can work with an open mindset in a diverse workplace.

While dealing with clients, commercial lawyers need to concisely explain complex legal concepts. Hence, being commercially aware and simplifying complexity is another skill, critical to the role of a commercial lawyer. I have developed this skill as a legal student advisor at the [redacted]. I interview clients and draft detailed advice letters. The letter highlights the client’s legal rights and practical solutions and is articulated in a simplified and easily comprehensible manner. I also host a podcast called ‘Spotlight by [redacted]’ where I break down and discuss complex commercial news and terms. 

As a commercial lawyer at a client-centric global law firm like Baker McKenzie being committed and adaptable is vital in providing the best service to clients. I work as a residential assistant at my university. I undertake various tasks like organising events, making deliveries, and setting up rooms for students. Shifting between different kinds of tasks and organising various events every week has helped me develop and understand the importance of adaptability and commitment.

Law firms are all different - tell us about three things, which are personal to you, that you feel differentiate Baker McKenzie from other leading firms and encouraged you to apply? (300 words max)* 

Firstly, I find Baker McKenzie’s global breadth attractive.      

The firm’s legal services centres operating in Manila, Belfast, Tampa and Buenos Aires help disaggregate high-volume, large-scale projects whilst supporting the needs of 77 international offices without time-zone obstacles. As someone who frequently moves between [Country 1] and [Country 2], the importance of cross-border collaboration stands out to me, especially in organising Vocational competitions remotely on an eight-hour time difference as [position] for the [Russell Group University London Society] . To me, Baker McKenzie’s efforts to provide seamless international support for clients and lawyers differentiates it from other firms, and I would be grateful for the opportunity to be part of this global network. 

Secondly, Baker McKenzie’s various pro bono initiatives promotes a strong sense of corporate social responsibility. Seen through the firm’s partnership with Terre des hommes to accelerate the release of children in detention during Covid-19, Baker McKenzie devotes time and resources to maintaining a civil presence, something which is especially important during these difficult times. As a volunteer at (NGO) (Country) where I work with underprivileged children, I admire the firm’s commitment to utilise their legal expertise in safeguarding children’s rights and improving their situations. Being involved in charitable initiatives excites and inspires me.        

Volunteering at (NGO) in (Country), I work with underprivileged children to improve their oral and written abilities in English. One of my students has dyslexia and struggles with reading, leading me to research and adjust my teaching to support his learning. Using props to increase sensory awareness, I encouraged him to learn new vocabularies through remembering the different senses respective words trigger. Gradually, he improved from only being able to retain one vocabulary to four per week. It was incredibly fulfilling and exciting to contribute to the student’s journey in overcoming his learning difficulties, particularly whilst witnessing his drive to improve. I found it inspiring that his determination to improve and overcome challenges, led to his steady progress and growing confidence.      

This year I worked as an (Position) at (NGO). I assisted senior advisors with their client advice sessions regarding benefits, housing and legal support, and was tasked with arranging appointments. I also handled enquiries over the phone, email and walk-in services, ensuring an accessible service in which clients can contact the charity to their convenience. I found the work incredibly illuminating in that I was given the opportunity to learn about people’s personal lives, and the issues that they face. Hearing about a variety of experiences was something I found eye-opening, and I was glad to be able to contribute to resolving concerns. I was also inspired by the charities’ constant drive to support the elderly. The staff worked tirelessly to improve their clients’ circumstances and always maintained a positive mindset. Their passion to help people ignited my desire to make further positive changes for people in need.

Having been selected as [position]for the (Name of Conference) I liaised with legal professionals to invite them to speak to over 200 students from various backgrounds with the aim of increasing representation and accessibility to the legal industry. Baker McKenzie’s active engagement with sixth form colleges in social mobility 'cold spots' through BakerOpportunity therefore particularly resonated with me, especially as I am currently orgnising the (Type of Conference), an (Name of Conference) initiative aimed at disadvantaged sixth form students. The network’s support of the firm’s PRIME Programme also highlights the important opportunities it provides for students from less privileged backgrounds. By allowing access to legal work experience at the firm through PRIME, BakerOpportunity illustrates a drive to break down barriers stereotypically associated with the legal industry, something which I would be thrilled to support and contribute towards. 

I would also support the firm’s BakerWellbeing group. In my role as (position) at school, I organised and fundraised for a non-profit organisation (name of NGO), which aims to provide support for those struggling with their mental health. To accomplish this, I liaised with teachers and set up traditional Cantonese food stalls during House events. The £560 I raised with my team helped the organisation introduce their “Help Me” virtual assistant, allowing users to raise concerns about mental health issues, and subsequently directing them to the relevant resources to access help. In an industry which is as dynamic as it is demanding, I was glad to see that BakerWellbeing prompted Mental Resilience training at the firm, as it demonstrates the firm’s efforts in eliminating the stigma surrounding mental health, whilst providing an important support network for its lawyers. Drawing from my experiences, this is a cause I would contribute to and support.            

Please tell us about a goal you set out to achieve. Why was this important to you and what was the outcome? (300 words max)*             

Following my move to [country 1] from [country 2] to complete my education, I experienced a drastic change in my learning and living environment which adversely affected my motivation and my academic performance.  

To overcome this, I created a (sport) training program with the goal to complete a ten-kilometer run to promote physical and mental well-being, especially in mitigating feelings of stress and homesickness. Through this, I hoped to ultimately enhance my academic performance. To create this program, I utilised a variety of cross-fit training websites to help me personalise a system that would be most effective in achieving my goal. Although I initially experienced slow progress, I adapted my training to my strengths and weaknesses in order to enhance my performance. Specifically, I altered my cardiovascular training by implementing additional five-kilometer runs to address my most profound weaknesses.  

Please tell us what you consider to be your key achievements and interests to date. (300 words max)* 

Winning the (Name of Negotiations Competition) is something I consider a key achievement. Initially, my partner and I found it challenging to compromise when the opposing team made propositions that were far from our clients’ expectations.       

Further, being in a small team of four, I find it invigorating to be able to take on heavy responsibilities for the sub-committee, as it provides me with opportunities to drive impactful change in improving the overall efficiency in organising competitions for (name of society) members. As much as I enjoyed the results of my hard work, I equally enjoyed the process of building unique working and personal relationships within my team. 

This resulted in us becoming fixated on one issue and unable to negotiate the remaining issues within the time limit. To improve this, I devised a strategy to analyse our client’s priorities and identify our lowest and highest limits as a framework to negotiate within. Implementing this facilitated us winning the competition, and qualified us as (Russell group University London) representatives in the (Name of University Negotiation Competition), where we emerged as champion over three other universities. I attribute my success with strong communication skills and attention to detail, skills which are paramount in meeting client objectives.     

I enjoy being part of student-led committees to work alongside my peers. As (Position) for the (Russell Group University London Society), I am responsible for signing up judges for student competitions and selecting the most suitable candidates based on experience and interest. Due to the large volume of sign-ups, I faced difficulty in screening all applications within the strict timeline. This was especially challenging as I was organising the competitions remotely on an eight hour time difference. Diversity and inclusion principles and initiatives are incredibly important to me. I am a Parsi Zoroastrian; part of a community that is less than 100,000 people globally. Furthermore, I regard myself to have a sexuality that is deviates from heteronormativity. I love to engage in support, and talking groups that discuss issues that individuals from diverse backgrounds face. This makes sure that those in 'minority' groups are included, but also that the majority are educated on a wider range of issues. In my secondary school, I started up a diversity and inclusivity student discussion group. My school was very traditional, and so I wanted to break the norm and encourage individuality of thought and being. The group I led met every week to discuss a variety of traditionally 'taboo' topics, including, sexuality, race, sexism, xenophobia, and how to merge a foreign culture in a Western environment. 

The way I would apply D & I, in my role, would be to draw on the wonderful support network of colleagues that are in Baker McKenzie. The best way to make individuals feel included is to talk to them: as Baker McKenzie is a global firm, there is no better way to learn about other cultures, and peoples, than talking to those very individuals! I would also love to throw myself into the variety of D & I programs that Baker McKenzie has including BakerEthnicity and BakerLGBT+.

These two ideas are linked by one principle: commerical law is the business of people. Law is an artificial construction made by people. People make the law, break the law, interpret the law, and reform the law.  If you understand the people, then you may understand the law. A client focused approach is a strategy where the client's needs and wants are prioritised. The firm, instead of focusing on hitting certain targets, puts the client first, and will supply the client with a holistic range of services and products to ensure that their business thrives. However, this does not mean foisting upon the client a superfluous range of products. This would only serve to complicate and exploit the client's matters. Client focus means acting with integrity, honesty, and closeness. The client should work closely with the firm, ensuring that they are well informed of all business undertaken by Baker McKenzie. However, for this kind of interaction, there must be trust. The client needs to know and feel that the firm has the client's best intentions at heart. Integrity and honesty, therefore are crucial - not only when dealing with the client, but in the manner in which the firm conducts itself as a whole.

As part of my role as Vice President in Durham Philosophy Society, I had to garner trust from our academic department (the Department of Philosophy) in order to secure funding. In past years, the Society had not been as scrupulous as it should have been: in order to reform its reputation, I had to put our sponsors and clients first. I took the executive decision to merge part of our business with the Department, regularly meeting with them and providing them with evidence and information about every action I took. This slowly allowed a network of trust to be built, and a healthier relationship was formed. The by-product of this, was that we secured the funding, but I cherished the new relationship more. A people focused approach works in tandem with a client focused approach. Focusing on the firm's people is crucial for the success of the firm. A firm is nothing without its employees, and benefits greatly from a diverse range of backgrounds, opinions, and skills.  To enact a people focused approach, employees must feel as though they are able to express themselves and be creative in their approach. They must also feel supported by the firm itself. Team building and morale is important in such a strategy. To me, a people focused approach is about a collective spirit and culture that is formed via the conglomeration of an ecclectic range of individuals. This creates a wonderful phenomenon - clients trust the firm because they know that the Baker McKenzie cultural family works well and will do their best for them. This strategy is present in Pharos Magazine, where I am Deputy Editor-in-Chief. Tell us about something - anything - that excites and inspires you.

For my dissertation I have been researching to what extent women’s engagement in sport challenges or reproduces gender norms. Competing at a National level in Riding and a Regional level in Athletics, I want to identify the ways in which my engagement in sport works to emancipate me from gender norms. On a societal level, I have found that female athletes reproduce gender norms, because the socially constructed nature of sport and the athlete often limits women into ‘feminine-appropriate’ sports, such as cheerleading or gymnastics. Their engagement in sport, thus perpetuates the notion that women are elegant, flexible and balanced. 

As women engage in traditionally masculine sports, such as rugby, their performance is delegitimized through oversexualisation; expectations of beauty norms and the feminine ideal; compulsory heterosexuality; and the simplification of women’s sports, e.g. the rule of no body checking in Women’s Canadian Hockey. Thus, women are unable to challenge gender norms, because they are deemed illegitimate athletes, whose sporting abilities are less important than their perceived sexuality and ability to conform to the feminine ideal. 

On an individual level, however, there is an emancipatory nature to women’s engagement in sport. As a woman becomes increasingly physically active, she forms a better relationship to her body; deter violence and unwanted sexual advances; and can feel less constrained by feminine gender norms. Thus, how an individual woman perceives gender norms is challenged. This is however largely influenced by hegemonic masculinity within the heteropatriarchal society, meaning that masculinity is given the highest cultural value. As a woman engages in sport and acquires muscle, which is associated with the masculine ideal, she moves closer to the hegemonic masculine form. Thus, a woman feels less constrained by feminine gender norms, because she embodies masculine traits which hold higher value in the heteropatriarchal society.

Studying Feminist Political Ideas at university, I gained a deeper insight into the discrimination of women, different ethnic groups and the LGBTQ+ community. Within seminars we encouraged an open dialogue and were accepting of individual experiences. There was a strong emphasis on tackling bias and challenging our own views. Increased communication and acceptance facilitated a transparent environment, in which each person could come to voice and contribute their own valuable experiences, widening our understanding of each topic. It was also liberating to feel respected and valued in my own contribution.

Please tell us about a goal you set out to achieve. Why was this important to you and what was the outcome?

In Sixth Form at [School] I achieved my Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award. In achieving this award I wanted to prove to myself that I had the determination to complete such demanding tasks alongside my studies.

The most challenging aspect, that tested whether I would achieve this goal, was the expedition. On the second to last day some members of the group had gone ahead so quickly, that I was unable to query the route. Climbing halfway down a cliff it transpired that they had been following the wrong page of the map. Finding where we were, I realised, we had over three hours of walking left, whilst they thought the campsite was nearby. To keep spirits high, I said that with a bit of determination we could get there soon. As we commenced down the cliff, it became foggy. A member of the group fell and cut her leg. Taking on the weight of her bag, I tied my scarf around her leg tightly, and got the boys to support her walking. In the distance there was a road. I thought this would be the best option to find our way back, and least dangerous given the fog and injured girl. After making it to the road, I navigated to the campsite. I quickly called our leader to attend to the injury and make sure that our group had the help that they needed. The other groups started cooking for us and putting our tents up, insisting that we had showers to warm up. Once we were in our tents, I couldn’t help but think that whilst we were in danger on that cliff, we had all managed to make it back safely through teamwork and determination, two qualities that remain with me today. I achieved my goal despite challenges faced.

I am writing to apply for the Baker McKenzie Training Contract. I initially became aware of this opportunity through my role as Baker McKenzie Ambassador in 2018, a position I had sought following my positive experience with the firm during the [university law fair]. 

My interest in commercial law began at university, whilst undertaking legal internships at two distinct organisations. The first internship, within the in-house legal team at Lloyds Banking Group in London, consisted of assisting HR with employment matters, carrying out legal research to ensure compliance with new banking regulations, and drafting agreements. This allowed me to offer general legal advice and an understanding of the law and its application, to the organisation. However, though I enjoyed solving specific business problems, I disliked the in-house 'generalist' approach of providing day-to-day legal support to one business – the bank – and acting as the middle-ground between the business and outside counsel. Rather, I sought a specialised role which would offer more high-profile client contact and an exciting, fast-based, transactional environment.

My second internship within a larger law firm focused on M&A, private equity, financial services and litigation. I thrived when participating in meetings with large clients such as venture capital funds and investment banks, and I was comfortable with being given high levels of responsibility to contribute to the firm's insight reports on pertinent legal issues such as trademarks and patents. In addition, I found the high-levels of interaction between practice areas – e.g. collaboration between project finance and real estate during an apartment complex transaction – more attractive than the 'sole-legal-department' approach adopted by in-house legal teams. My most notable highlights during this internship include completing documentation required to allot shares between reputable consumer brands and the submission of company reports to Companies House. 

My ability to use initiative when solving complex problems, strong emotional intelligence such as resilience and my ability to adapt to new departments, enabled me to receive positive feedback from the Partners that I worked alongside, demonstrating that I am ready to start my Training Contract at Baker McKenzie. The firm’s 71% trainee retention rate and high expectations of trainees correspond with my desire to apply my dedicated work ethic to intellectual challenges and further my career progression upon qualification. I am selfassured in my ability to work within a commercial environment, communicating with clients and pushing myself to succeed in all aspects of work.
